Indoor 2005

MOUNTAINEER MEN 7th, WOMEN 16th AT NAIA MEET

 

Led by Senior All Americans Eric Griffiths (6th), Alex McGladrey (8th), and Ian Schroeder (20th) the mountaineer men’s cross country team finished 7th in the NAIA National Championships.  The 7th place finish marks the fifth straight year they have finished in the top 10.  Rounding out the team was Josh Ego, Daniel Sipko, Troy Blackburn, and Jake Peterson.

The Women’s team continued it’s trend of improving every meet and used a good pack to improve upon their ranking going into the meet.  The women were led by Jessyca Barker finishing just out of All-American honors.  Other members of the team were Stephanie Collkitt, Rian Finney, Shanwa Muchow, Jessica Johnston, Nicole Woitovitch, and Becca Mielke.

Bortz, Cooper, and Booth Qualify For Nationals at First Indoor Meet

 

Nampa - Dirk Bortz hit the automatic qualifier in the weight throw, and Adam Cooper and Emily Booth hit provisional qualifiers in the weight  throw and High Jump respectively.  Other highlights from the meet include Nate Hendricks winning the 800m, Talon Jayo’s runner up finish in the 60, and Booth’s runner up finish in the high jump.   Also red shirt Matt Lane won the open 400m and 200m events.  According to Coach Welch in was “overall, a nice solid opener.”

 

 

Strong Performances and Three National Qualifiers at Hampton Inn and Suites Classic

 

Nampa - Shawn Trimble lead the way for the Mountaineers with his second place finish and bettering the automatic qualifier by over foot in the pole vault with a mark of 16’6.75”.   Nate Hendricks just missed winning his heat and finished 4th in the 800m with a provisional qualifying time of 1:57.27.  The final national qualifier was John Cosgrove with a mark of 49’9.75”, a 1 foot personal best, in the weight throw.  He also had a 3 foot personal best in the shot put.  The mountaineers will have be in action next weekend with a small squad in Nampa and a couple of athletes at the University of Washington.  The full squad will compete again in two weeks.

 

 

 

Mounties Get 1 automatic and 2 provisional Qualifiers

 

A small squad competed for the mountaineers this weekend at two different meets and they came away with two more national qualifiers and a handful of strong performances.  In Seattle at the University of Washington Invite Nate Hendricks just hit the automatic qualifier in the 1000m in 2:32.34, and Ian Schroeder completed the 3000m in 8:49.01 provisionally qualifying for the NAIA indoor meet.  In Nampa at the Athletes.com Invite Talon Jayo blazed down the track in the 60m dash in 6.99 seconds, a provisional qualifying time, to make the final in the primarily division I field.  He then finished 8th in the final in 7.29 seconds.  Other strong performer were Jason Stevens in the 400m and 200m with times of 51.76 and 23.25 respectively.  Jayo also ran the 200m in 23.53, and Dirk Bortz had a throw of 51’10.50” in the Weight Throw.

 

Small Squad Performs well at United Heritage Invitational

 

Nampa, ID— A small contingent of mountaineers made the trek to Nampa for the United Heritage Invitational, but they all performed well.  Some of the highlights include Shawn Trimble placing second in the pole vault with a jump of 16’6.75, and just missed at 17’2”.   In the 400m Jason Stevens narrowly missed the provisional qualifier finishing in 51.17.  For the second week in a row Talon Jayo made the final in the 60m and finished 6th place.  Josh Ego and Troy Blackburn both ran excellent races in the 3000m.  Josh ran a pr of 9:10.62, and Troy ran right around his pr in 9:13.38.   Friday night in the weight throw Dirk Bortz threw a seasonal best of 53’3” improving his seed for the national meet.  Also competing unattached freshman Matt Lane finished 4th in the 400m in 49.05 and 3rd in the 200m with a lifetime best of  22.05.

 

 

 

 

 

Bortz Sets School Record, Schroeder and Cooper Qualify for Nationals at The University of Idaho

 

Moscow, ID— The mountaineers hit the road with the full squad and had several good performances.  Dirk Bortz had and  outstanding evening Friday night as he finished fourth in the discus throw (seldomly c6ntested indoors) with a throw of 167’8”.  Later in the weight throw event he smashed his pr and the school record with a throw of 56’0” to finish second place.  Adam Cooper also threw an automatic qualifying mark in the weight throw with a personal best of 51’8”.  On Saturday Ian Schroeder led the Mounties with his automatic qualifying time of 2:31.98, less  than a second off of the school record.   Other mountaineers with strong performances were Eric Griffith in the pentathlon with a score of  3335, which might be able to get him in to the national meet.  For the women Emily Booth performed well in the high jump finishing third with a mark of 5’1.75”, and three good attempts at the automatic qualifier.  Nicole Woitovitch ran a lifetime best in the 800m with a time of 2:30.45, and Missy Jacobson threw well in the shot put, and weight throws with pr’s in both in throws of 36’2.75” and 36’00” respectively.

Seven  Mounties Heading to NAIA Indoor National Championships

 

Seven members of the mountaineer track team are preparing to compete in the NAIA indoor national championships in Johnson City Tennessee March 4 - 6.  The athletes competing in the meet will be:

Talon  Jayo, 55m Dash 19th seed, prelims Fri, 1:50 p.m., semis Fri, 4:00 p.m.,      Finals Sat, 1:25 p.m. EST

Ian Schroeder, 1000m run 10th seed, semis Fri, 4:55 p.m., Finals Sat, 1:55 p.m. EST

Nate Hendricks, 1000m run 12th seed

Dirk Bortz, Weight Throw 4th seed, Friday 1:00 p.m. EST

Adam Cooper, Weight Throw 17th seed

Shawn Trimble, Pole Vault 1st seed, Saturday 12:30 p.m. EST

Bortz Earns All American, Schroeder Advances To The Finals

 

Johnson City TN, March 4— Dirk Bortz uncorked a lifetime best throw by over two feet with a mark of 58’4” to finish third place in the weight throw and earn his first All American award.  This was an outstanding performance for Dirk, and a great start to the weekend.  Later in the afternoon Ian Schroeder finished third in his heat of the 1000m run in 2:31.13 to advance to tomorrows final.  The Other Mounties competing today all performed well too.  Adam Cooper also threw a lifetime best of 52’9.5” in the weight throw and finished in 14th place.  Talon Jayo finished 5th in his preliminary heat of the 55m dash in 6.67, missing the semi-finals, but a good experience for the freshman.  Nate Hendricks also did well in his first national meet finishing 5th in his heat of the 1000m run in 2:34.31.

Trimble and Schroder Earn All-American All American Awards In Final Day

 

The Mounties capped an impressive national meet with two more All Americans on the final day of the NAIA Indoor Championships.   In the 1000m final Ian Schroeder ran a lifetime best and school record time of 2:30.12 to finish 5th.  This is Ian’s second All American award this year as he received the honor in cross country as well.  The other All American for the Mountaineers was Shawn Trimble who finished in a tie for 3rd in the pole vault with a jump of 15’9” for his fifth All American award.  Shawn had some of his best jumps, however they were on a borrowed pole as his were lost in shipment and he wasn’t able use a bigger pole.  The final performer of the day was Emily Booth in the High Jump.  She finished 13th with a jump of 5’3”, which equals her seasons best mark, and hopefully a sign of things to come for the freshman.  The Mountie men finished 13th in the team race with 11.25 points, the highest team finish for indoor track and field.
