Mounties Open Season At Hampton Inn & Suites Classic
Nampa Idaho, January 20— The Eastern Oregon University Track & Field teams opened their 2007 indoor season with several strong performances. On the men’s side sophomore Mitch Wheelhouse threw a nearly four foot personal best in the weight throw with a mark of 48-6, and was just six inches off his lifetime best with the 16 pound shot throwing 47-7.75. Both marks were only 18 inches off the provisional qualifier for the NAIA indoor championships. Sophomore multi-event athlete Lucas Ohmes was busy competing in the Pole Vault, Shot Put, and 60m hurdles. In the 60m hurdles he qualified for the final where he tied his personal best missing the provisional mark by one tenth of a second. Adam Goulet finished 2nd in the Mile Run in 4:30.76 after leading the most the race. The winner finished with a 60 second last 400m to pull away. For the women’s team Freshman Danielle Reese ran well in her first indoor meet, running the 400m in 1:03.01 and leading off in her first 4x400m relay ever. Junior Kasie Gillespie was busy in her first competition in two years after sitting out last year, running the 60m hurdles, 4x400m relay and long jumping. She ran 10.05 in the hurdles and long jumped 16-3 inches. According to coach Welch the meet was a solid opening event, considering the cold weather the last two weeks, and several athletes had never seen an indoor facility before. Three athletes will be in action next weekend in Nampa for a multi-event competition; Carla Hoppie, Kasie Gillespie, and Lucas Ohmes. |

Ohmes, Gillespie Compete At Bronco Indoor
Nampa Idaho, January 27— Mounties Lucas Ohmes and Kasie Gillespie were in action at the Bronco Indoor Invitational for Multi-Event competitions. Lucas Ohmes competed in the Heptathlon finishing 2nd with 4,427 points. Throughout the two day event Lucas had personal bests in the Pole Vault, Shot Put, 1000m run, and 60m dash. In addition his Long Jump was his best jump in a Multi-Event competition. After his performance he is currently 4th on the NAIA list with the top 16 receiving an invite to the championship meet. For Kasie Gillespie this was only her second track meet after being out of competition for nearly two years competed in the Pentathlon. Overall she had a rough meet finishing 5th with 2,748 points. However, according to Coach Welch she had some very good things in the competition, with promise for strong performances in the future. She is currently ranked 9th in the NAIA. |

Mounties Show Improvement At United Heritage Invitational
Nampa Idaho, February 2 & 3— The Mountie Track & Field team was in action over the weekend at the United Heritage Invite hosted by Boise State. The athletes turned in many good performances early season performances with near misses on qualifying marks. On Friday night two sprinters along with the women’s and men’s Distance Medley Relays were in action. Erin Ontko showed considerable improvement running the 60m and 200m dashes and qualifying for Saturdays Final in the 60m. The lone men’s sprinter Andrew Wise-Grittman also ran well, with a strong in just his second 400m and was able to qualify for the final in the 200m. Both relays ran well, but were short of the goal to qualify for the Championship Meet. The women’s team members were Kyle Janssen, Dani Reis, Laura Clayton, and Marcella Bosch ran well finishing in 13:19.8. The men’s team also ran well and came from behind in the last leg to win in 10:38.9. The Mounties had several more strong performances on Saturday. For the women Trish Harshberger had the performance of the day in the weight throw with a mark of 45-6.25, a 4 foot personal best. Kyle Janssen and Danielle Murphey implemented different strategies in the 600m with similar results. Danielle went out fast, while Kyle closed well and both just missed the qualifying mark. Other strong performances were 4x400m relay team also ran well and are looking to go after the qualifying time in two weeks, and in the pole vault Cayla Wiessert cleared 10-2 in her first collegiate meet. For the men’s squad Mitch Wheelhouse continues to throw well and was just all his seasonal bests in the Shot Put and Weight Throw. Andrew Wise-Grittman came back well running just off his lifetime best in the 200m in 23.33. In the 1000m returning All American Adam Goulet led most of the race before finishing 2nd with a hard closing Zach Heath right behind. Like several of their teammates just missing the qualifying mark. Josh Ego and Troy Blackburn also ran well in a good 3000m field finishing 6th and 7th in 9:16 and 9:17 respectively. The Mounties will have one more chance to hit qualifying marks for the National Meet in two weeks at the University of Idaho. |

Mounties Perform Well At University of Idaho
Moscow Idaho, February 16 & 17— The Mountaineer Track & Field Teams wrapped up the indoor regular season with two meets at the University of Idaho. On Friday night three athletes and a relay team competed in the Vandal Indoor. On the women’s side Marcella Bosch hung tough in a Mile field were she was the only non-division 1 athlete running a season best 5:24.44. The women’s 4x400m relay team also competed looking for the NAIA qualifying time. Without their normal lead off leg due to a sprained ankle the team turned in their second best time of the season. The team of Kyle Janssen, Bosch, Danielle Murphy, and Chelsee Harmon. On the men’s side Zach Heath was in a field similar to Bosch and ran tough finishing in a season best 1:59.06. Lucas Ohmes also competed in the meet; running the 60m hurdles in 8.70. On Saturday the entire team was in action and produced some very strong performances. Overall the Mounties had 9 heat winners, including 2 overall winners and several athletes had season best performances. On the women’s side Kasie Gillespie had a crazy day competing in an unorthodox Pentathlon and produced a mark that pretty much guarantees she will be competing in NAIA Championships. Laura Clayton ran a strong 800m finishing in 2:29.52, and Marcella Bosch came back after a busy Friday night to finish 3rd in the 3000m in 11:00.57. The men’s team was lead by Mitch Wheelhouse who threw season bests in the Shot Put and Weight Throw of 48-2.5 and 48-3.5 respectively. Andrew Wise-Grittman ran well in the 200m and 400m; running a 400m pr of 51.53 and just missing in the 200m. In the mid distances Adam Goulet and Zach Heath both were event winner. Heath running his second 800m in two days lead wire to wire winning in 1:59.64. In the Mile Goulet used a strong kick to take top honors in 4:24.93. Next up Lucas Ohmes and Kasie Gillespie will most likely compete at the NAIA Indoor Championships as long as they stay in the top 16 of the Multi Event rankings. It would take several great performances to keep them home. |

Gillespie, Ohmes Set To Compete At Indoor Championships
Johnson City Tennessee, March 8-10— Kasie Gillespie and Lucas Ohmes will be the lone competitors for the Eastern Oregon University Track & Field teams at the NAIA Indoor Championships in Johnson City Tennessee over the weekend. Gillespie will compete in the women’s Pentathlon on Thursday March 8; while Ohmes will compete in the men’s Heptathlon during Thursday and Friday. Gillespie Finishes 9th At NAIA Indoor Championships
Johnson City Tennessee, March 8— Kasie Gillespie and Lucas Ohmes were in action on the first day of the NAIA Indoor Championships. Gillespie, competing in the women’s Pentathlon, finished 9th with 3012 points. She got out to a good start and finished the competition well. In the 60h she ran 9.71 scoring 767 points. She high jumped 5-1.25 for another 689 points, and got 472 points in the shot put with a throw of 29-11.25. After a long jump of 15-3.5 worth 469 points, she ran a strong 800 finishing in 2:36.36 for 615 points. On the men’s side Ohmes had a good first day of the two day heptathlon competition and is sitting in 6th place. In the first event, the 60m dash, he tied for 3rd in 7.28 for 785 points. He then long jumped 20-8 for 652 points and threw the shot 37-4.5 for 569 points. He closed out the first day high jumping 5-4.5 for 496 points. He will complete the heptathlon tomorrow with the 60h, pole vault, and 1000m run.

Ohmes Finishes 13th In NAIA Heptathlon
Johnson City Tennessee, March 9— Entering the second and final day of the Heptathlon competition Lucas Ohmes was sitting in 6th place and the final All American spot. He opened with a solid hurdle race finishing 4th in 8.88 scoring 772 points and strengthening his hold on sixth place. However, in the next event he lost his position with a no height in the Pole Vault. This is the third time in the last 5 years a male EOU athlete has no heighted at the indoor championships. He was able to regroup and finish the competition with a good 1000m race, running 3:05.76. Those 609 points brought his total to 3,883 and finishing in 13th position. According to coach Welch, “while both athletes did not achieve what they had hoped to here, they competed well and as sophomores will be back for more in the next few years.” |
