Ohmes, Dilley Earn All American Honors At NAIA Championships

 

Johnson City Tennessee, March 6 & 7— The EOU Track & Field teams wrapped up the NAIA Indoor Championships with several strong performances and two athletes earned All American honors.  Lucas Ohmes entered the second day of the competition in 11th place, and was able to use a strong second day to move into 6th place, which included at 3 second personal best in the 1,000m run which is the final event of the competition.  This was Ohmes’ first indoor All American award and third overall.  Also in the Heptathlon  Ivan Staeheli finished 12th in his first championship competition.  The Mounties second All American award came the men’s Weight Throw, where Chris Dilley finished 3rd place.  Dilley entered the meet as the top seed and lead for several rounds.  However, two competitors threw big personal bests to surpass him.  Also in the Weight Throw Quinten Baxter was hampered by a sore elbow and finished 27th.  On the women’s side Cayla Weissert equaled her season best, and just missed the next height n the pole vault.  In the 200m Orie Gamez had a rough start but ran well over the second have to run  26.27.

Two Mounties were in action on the final day of the competition.  Ohmes came back to clear the opening height in the Pole Vault, before the fatigue from the two day Heptathlon caught up with him.  Baxter also came back in the shot put and finished 17th place.

The Mounties will begin the outdoor season on March 14th at the NNU Crusader Open in Nampa, Idaho.

 

 

Mounties Have Good First Day At NAIA Championships

 

Johnson City Tennessee, March 5— The Mountaineer Track & Field teams kicked off the NAIA Indoor Championships with a good first day.  After day one of the men’s Heptathlon freshman Ivan Staeheli sits in 9th place and Lucas Ohmes is in 11th.  Ohmes is well back of his #3 ranking, however his is only a few points behind his qualifiying performance.  Typically his best events are the on the second day of the competition. Meanwhile, Staeheli is about 30 points ahead of his first day total from his qualifying effort.  In the women’s Pentathlon Kimmy Moore,the only Freshman in the 15 woman field, finished 9th place in the competition and a mere 6 points off the school record. Moore entered the competition ranked 12th and scored 220 points more than she did in her qualifying meet- an outstanding improvement. During the competition she tied her indoor best in the 60 meter hurdles, set a new PR in the HJ by about 3 inches, just missed her PR in the Long Jump by 1/2 an inch, threw a 2'3" PR in the Shot Put,  and ran an outstanding 6 second PR in the 800! To conclude the day the women’s Distance Medley Relay team of Marcella Bosch, Alma Garcilazo, Kami Hernandez, and Sara Bates took over 11 seconds off the school record they set in early.  Unfortunately they came up a just short of the 8 team final, finishing 10th out of 25 teams. During the 1,600m leg Bates shaved an amazing 13 seconds off her previous best!

 

 

Three School Records Fall At BSU Team Invite

 

Nampa Idaho, February 13 & 14— The EOU Track & Field teams wrapped up the regular indoor season with several strong performances with 11 marks that made the top 5 lists.  The highlight of the meet was freshman Orie Gamez, who set two individual school records and was part of a third.  Her first record was in the 60m dash, where her time of 8.13 shaved .07 seconds off the previous record.  Then came the 200m, where she broke a 19 year old record with her time of 26.01 and just missed the NAIA auto qualifier.  Finally, she teamed up with Kelsey Kinzer, Samantha Boyd, and Kimmie Moore in the 4 x 400m relay to best the previous record by nearly two seconds.  Other strong performances on the women’s side came from Sara Bates who ran a 10 second PR in the 800m, and Erin Ontko in the Penthatlon who set PR in 4 of the 5 events.

The men’s team also turned in good performances.  Quinten Baxter added a NAIA provisional qualifier in the weight throw to go with his auto qualifier in the shot put.  In Heptathlon Ivan Staeheli and Asa Miller both performed well.  Miller improved his score from last weekend, while Staeheli finished 3rd with a score that has a good chance of qualifying him for the NAIA Championship meet.  Other strong performances came from Andrew Wise, who ran top 5 times in the both 60m and 200m races; along with Fernando Morales who ran indoor PRs in the 800m and 400m with his leg on a relay team.

Next up the Mounties will be in Johnson City, Tennessee for the NAIA Indoor Championships March 5-8.

 

 

Women’s DMR Qualifies For NAIA Meet, Ohmes Sets Personal Best In Heptathlon

 

 

Nampa Idaho/Pocatello Idaho, February 6 & 7— The EOU Track & Field teams sent small squads to  two meets over the weekend.  The Mountie women sent a distance medley relay to Nampa Idaho to compete in the United Heritage Invitational, while six multi event athletes competed at Idaho State.  In Nampa it was a successful evening, as the relay team of Marcella Bosch, Alma Garcilazo, Kami Hernandez, and Sara Bates qualified for the NAIA Championship Meet, and broke the school record with a time of 12:33.53.

In Pocatello the Mounties had ups and downs.  In the women’s Pentathlon three freshman, Kimmie Moore, Jessianne Heley, and Samantha Boyd all began their EOU careers.  Moore was the top Mountie finisher in 16t place with a score of 2,942 points.  Heley and Boyd finished with 2,600 and 2,540 points respectively.  Three Mounties also competed in the men’s Heptathlon; All American Lucas Ohmes, school record holder Chris Hoppie, and freshman Asa Miller.  Ohmes had a strong meet, setting a new personal best of 4,865 points which was good enough for a 3rd place finish.  Ohmes’s score should get him into the upcoming NAIA championships.  Hoppie and Miller were both having good meets before set backs on the second day.  Hoppie was in position after the first day to put up a mark that would qualify for the NAIA meet, before restraining a hamstring during the 60m hurdles.  Miller was also performing well in his first Heptathlon before no heighting in the pole vault. 

 

 

Mounties Kick Off Indoor Season With Several Outstanding Performances At BSU

 

Nampa Idaho, January 24— The Mountie Track & Field Teams kicked off the 2009 indoor season with three NAIA auto qualifying marks, two provisional qualifying marks, two school records, and numerous personal bests.  All three auto qualifiers and both school records were set on the men’s side.  Quinten Baxter got the meet rolling by winning the shot put with a throw of 51-4.5, which is an auto qualifier and a new school record.  Also in the throwing events Chris Dilley finished 2nd in the weight throw with a big toss of 62-0.5, which is an auto qualifier and a school record by nearly 4 feet.  The third auto qualifier was Lucas Ohmes with a personal best jump 15-5.  Ohmes also ran a personal best in the 60m hurdles of 8.66 while he was in between jumps in the pole vault.  Competing in his first ever indoor meet Ryan Booth ran a 7 second personal best in the 800m with a time of 2:00.52.

On the women’s side All Americans Marcella Bosch and Cayla Weissert led the way as both athletes his provisional qualifying marks.  In the mile run Bosch ran an indoor best of 5:15.68 to comfortably qualify for the championship meet.  While in the pole vault Weissert easily cleared 10-10, and then had three good attempts at 11-5 which would have been an auto qualifier.  Other good performances on the women’s side came from Sara Bates with a personal best in the mile run of 5:21.85, and Trisha Harshberger in the weight throw with a personal best of 47-9.75.

The Mounties will send the multi event athletes back to Nampa weekend where the men will compete in a heptathlon, while the women will compete in a pentathlon.
