Garcilazo, Roy Earn All American Honors on Final Day of NAIA Championships
Johnson City Tennesse, March 6—The Mounties had three athletes competing on the final day of the NAIA Indoor Championships, and came away with two All Americans and a near miss. Alma Garcilazo got the day started in the 800m. She positioned herself in the middle of the pack early. She was able to stay out of trouble to finish 4th, and earn her first All American award. Next up was Ryan Booth in the men’s 800m. After getting stuck towards the back in the tightly packed race. He competed well, but was unable to move up into the top 6. The final Mountie Athlete competing was Jeff Roy in the 1,000m. Roy sat back early, avoiding a box in situation, then closed strong to finish 3rd. His time set a new school record, a new personal best, and earned his first All American honor. Overall, the Mounties competed well over three day championship. All ten athletes that competed finished in the top 15 of their respective events, eight finished in the top 10, and three were named All Americans.
Mounties Have Strong Second Day of NAIA Championships
Johnson City Tennessee, March 5— The EOU Track & Field teams had a very strong day at the NAIA Indoor Championships, as Dustin Cloud continued his impressive multi-event competition, and 4 of the 5 remaining athletes made the final in their respective event. Despite a sore groin, Dustin Cloud held is position from Day 1 with a 9th place finish in the Heptathlon, setting new personal bests in the 60m hurdles and 1000m races; as well as his overall point total. In the men’s weight throw, Chris Dilley and Mitch Wheelhouse both threw season bests. Dilly finished third in the competition, earning his third All American honor. Wheelhouse just missed the final, finishing 13th, after coming in as the 40th seed. On the track, Alma Garcilazo, Ryan Booth, and Jeff Roy all ran outstanding races to make tomorrow’s finals. Garcilazo ran a monster last 100m to easily win her heat of the 800m, and enters final as the second seed. Next up in the men’s 800m, Ryan Booth survived a tightly contested and unevenly paced race to finish 3rd and qualify as the fifth seed in the final. The final competitor of the day was Jeff Roy in the 1,000m. Roy won his heat in a new personal best by over three seconds. His time is also the second best in school history. Tomorrow Garcilazo, Booth, and Roy all compete in their respective finals.
Mounties Conclude First Day of NAIA Championships
Johnson City Tennessee, March 4— Two multi-event athletes, and a relay team kicked of the NAIA Indoor Championships for the Mounties. In the women’s Pentathlon Kimmy Moore had an off day. However, after not clearing a height in the high jump, she came back to throw a three foot personal best in the shot put. She concluded the competition in 15th place with 2,501 points. In the men’s Heptathlon Dustin Cloud had a strong day 1, seting personal bests in the hurdles, long jump, and shot put. He was also just off his personal best in the high jump. After the first day of the competition he is sitting in 9th place, and is within striking distance of 6th. Rounding out the day the women’s 4 x 400m relay team of Melisa Abesa, Grace Deboodt, Orie Gamez, and Alma Garcilazo just missed making the finals, however they set new school record in the process. Coming up on day 2 of the Championships; Dustin Cloud competes in the second day of the Heptathlon, Alma Garcilazo and Ryan Booth run the preliminary round of the 800m, Chris Dilley and Mitch Wheelhouse compete in the weight throw, and Jeff Roy competes in the preliminary round of the 1,000m.
Two More Qualify for NAIA Championships at Idaho Collegiate Meet
Moscow Idaho, February 19— The EOU Track & Field teams got several strong performances, and two more qualifiers for upcoming NAIA Championship meet. For the women, Alma Garcilazo continued her impressive season. After false starting in the 400m, she came back to win the 800m as a late addition to field . She then came back with an impressive 200m, which was the next event. In the 3000m Karley Coffee ran her first track race ever, finishing 2nd and was just short of qualifying for the championship meet. Other strong performances include Orie Gamez and Talissa Baldavino in both the 200m and 400m races, and McKinzie Anderson in the high jump who had two personal best jumps in the event. On the men’s side, Mountie throwers Chris Dilley, Mitch Wheelhouse, and Andy Munsey finished 4th, 5th, and 7th respectively in the weight throw. Wheelhouse’s performance was good enough to hit the automatic qualifier, with Munsey coming just short. Dilley had exceed the mark in prior competitions. The second NAIA qualifier came from Jeff Roy, who led wire to wire to win his heat in the 800m in a new personal best of 1:55.18. Also in the race Carlos Quintana ran a three second indoor personal best. Other strong performances came from Ryan Booth in the 400m with a new personal best, and the 4x400m relay team of Roy, Quintana, Booth, and Tyler June. This was the final meet of the indoor regular season, next up will be the NAIA Championship Meet in Johnson City, Tennessee March 4 - 6.
Mounties Produce Big Performances in BSU Team Meet
Nampa Idaho, February 12 & 13— The EOU Track & Field Teams continued the 2010 indoor campaign at the BSU Team Meet, and came away with several strong performances. The first day of the meet was limited to multi-event competitions with the women’s Pentathlon and day 1 of the men’s heptathlon. Three Mounties competed in the Pentathlon. Kimmy Moore had an outstanding day finishing 2nd and setting a new school record. Her score should qualify her for the NAIA Championship, as it was 102 points better than her 9th place finish last year. McKenzie Anderson finished 6th overall, and moved into 4th on the all time list. Her long jump mark is also 2nd on the all time list. The third competitor was Jessianne Heley, who set a new personal best by 97 points. The Mounies also had two competitors in the Heptathlon; Dustin Cloud and Asa Miller. Both athletes performed well on day 1, and came back strong on day 2 as Cloud finished 5th and Miller was 7th. Historically, Cloud’s score qualifies for the NAIA meet. In other events, on the women’s side, Alma Garcilazo ran an impressive 800m. She finished 2nd, just 0.03 seconds behind first, with a new personal best by over 10 seconds and qualifying for the NAIA meet. She is also sitting at 2nd on the schools all time list. Other strong performances include Marybeth Nash in the weight throw, and Orie Gamez and Talissa Baldovino in the 400m. On the men’s side, Mountie athletes won both heats of the 800m. Jeff Roy won the first heat in a new personal best, and just missed the NAIA auto qualifier. While in the second heat Ryan Booth stole the show, timing his kick perfectly to take the lead just before the finish line. His time was a seven second personal best, was a new school record, and qualified him for the upcoming NAIA championship. This is the third event that Booth has qualified in for the NAIA meet. The men’s throwers also had a good day, as Chris Dilley finished 4th in the weight throw. Teammates Andy Munsey and Mitch Wheelhouse were close behind, both with new personal bests. Larry Warren performed well in the long jump, making the finals and he had a near miss on a big jump. Next up the Mounties will be in Moscow, Idaho on February 19th for the Idaho Collegiate Meet, hosted by the University of Idaho.
Mounties Open Up 2010 Season With Strong Performances at Bronco Invitational
Nampa Idaho, January 30— A small squad of Mountaineer Athletes traveled to Nampa, Idaho to compete in the BSU Bronco Invitational, and came a way with several national qualifiers and school records. On the women’s side, Alma Garcilazo turned in a fine performance in the 600m. She won the setting a new school record and hitting the NAIA automatic qualifying mark. Close behind was Talisa Baldavino, who ran a personal best and just missed the NAIA provisional mark. The women’s 4x400m relay team of Melissa Abesa, Grace Deboodt, Orie Gamez, and Kimmy Moore concluded the meet by setting a school record by over seven seconds, and surpassing the NAIA automatic mark by over three seconds. The men’s squad also turned in several fine performances, led by Ryan Booth. Booth won the 1,000m race and hit the NAIA automatic mark, then came back to win the 600m race in a school record and NAIA provisional qualifying time. Close behind Booth in the 1,000m race, Jeff Roy finished 2nd in a NAIA provisional time, and in the 600m race Carlos Quintana finished 2nd also with a NAIA provisional mark. In the weight throw Chris Dilley picked up where he left off, easily qualifying for the national meet with an automatic qualifying mark. Also in the weight throw Andy Munsey just missed the provisional mark. Another strong performance came from freshman Larry Warren, who finished 4th in the Long Jump in his first ever collegiate competition with the second best jump in school history. Next up the Mounties will be back in Nampa on February 12 & 13 for the BSU team scored meet. |
