Mounties Have Historic Meet At NAIA Championships
Geneva Ohio, March 3 - 5— The Eastern Oregon Track & Field teams left their mark on the NAIA Championship Meet with three individual national champions, six total All Americans, and four new school records. Robbie Haynie became the Mounties first ever male indoor national champion, as he one the Heptathlon with a school record 5,473 points. During the competition he set personal bests in six of the seven events, and set a championship record in the Pole Vault portion of the event. He then came back to win the Pole Vault title the next day. He also competed in the High Jump, which took place immediately after he completed the Heptathlon. For his efforts, and two national titles, he was named the men’s outstanding performer of the meet. On the women’s side, Karlee Coffey, became just the third female to win an Indoor Title. She entered the 3000m race as the 5th seed, and controlled the pace as she pulled away for a five second win and new school record. It was a dominating effort, in just her fourth indoor race ever. This was Coffey’s fourth overall All American award. The 800m was also a good event for the Mounties, as all three athletes (one male, two female) entered in the event earned All American honors. In the women’s event, Alma Garcilazo broke the school record for second consecutive day as she finished second. Also in the race, Sarah Hanchett ran two impressive races as she set a new personal best and finished in sixth. In the men’s race, Ryan Booth was able to fight through being sick, and finished 5th. For Garcilazo this was her third All American award, while it was the first for Hanchett and Booth. The Mounties had several other strong performances as well. The fourth school record came from the women’s distance medley relay team of Laura Hansen, Talissa Baldovino, Hanchett, and Christine Eckstein, that missed making the final by 0.09 seconds and finished 9th overall. DJ Flores finished 9th in the 3000m final after just missing the school record in the preliminary round. The men’s distance medley relay team of Hans Rolle, Flores, Booth, and Kody Coxen finished 14th in the preliminaries. Annie Barnett finished 16th in the weight throw and 15th in the shot put, while Ashlee Michelson finished 20th in the Shot Put.
Mounties Perform Well in Indoor Finale
Pullman Washington, February 19— Competing at the Washington State Open II in their last indoor meet before the NAIA National meet EOU Track and Field had a handful of quality performances. In the Field events, Annie Barnett and Robbie Haynie lead the way for EOU. Barnett added an automatic qualifying mark in the shot put to go with her auto in the 20# weight throw, as she unleashed a monster toss of 44' 8.25" to finish third behind a pair of NCAA Division 1 throwers. Her previous best was 42'3.25" just last week. Haynie added a provisional mark in the High Jump with a leap of 6'7", to go along with his auto qualifiers in the heptathlon and pole vault. On the track, Ryan Booth and Alma Garcilazo both dominated the competition in winning the 800. Booth came from behind over the last 100 meters, while Garcilazo took control early and ran away from the field and set a new EOU record of 2:13.98. The Mounties has several near misses on the day, as Sarah Hanchett, Hans Roelle, Justin Dean, and the women's 4x400 team of Kadie Booth, Kelsey Kinzer, Kimmy Moore and Brittany Sims all just missed the NAIA auto qualifiers in their respective events. Moore also had a good performance in the 400m to win her heat. Next up, the Mounties will compete in the 2011 NAIA National meet in Geneva, Ohio the first weekend of March.
Mounties Get Four School Records, Three More NAIA Qualifiers At BSU Team Meet
Nampa Idaho, February 11 & 12— The EOU Track & Field teams picked up where they left off; breaking four school records, getting three auto qualifiers, and two heptathlon scores that will most likely qualify for the championship meet. On the men’s side, Robbie Haynie dominated the heptathlon as he won five of the seven events, and teammate Dustin Cloud finish second. Hanyie also set school records in the heptathlon and pole vault, while Clouds mark equaled his best score. Haynie’s performance is currently leading the NAIA performance list, and Cloud’s should most get him into the meet. In the men’s 800, Ryan Booth won the race, broke his own school record, and hit the NAIA auto qualifying mark. DJ Flores, also hit the NAIA auto mark in the men’s 3,000m. Other strong performances came from Carson Hendryx and Jake Wilcox in the weight throw, as they threw five and two foot personal bests, respectively On the women’s side, Karlee Coffey led the way in the 3,000m; winning the race, setting a new school record, and hitting the NAIA auto qualifier. In the shot put Anne Barnett and Ashley Michelson threw identical personal bests, just missing the automatic qualifier. Other strong performances came from Cory O’Neil and Kadie Booth in the 60m, with the 5th and 6th best times in school history, and Laura Hansen with a 10 second personal best in the mile. Next up, the Mounties will travel to Pullman Washington for the final meet of the regular season.
Mounties Open Indoor Season With Eleven National Qualifiers and Two School Records
Nampa Idaho, January 28 & 29— The EOU Track and Field started the 2011 Indoor Track & Field season off in fine style today on the Jackson's Track at the Idaho Center in Nampa, Idaho. The Mounies had athletes in four events on the first day of the meet, and they made very good use of their opportunities. Anne Barnett started the day off in fine style for the Mounties with a NAIA automatic qualifying mark with a fine mark of 50'2", which is the 3rd best in school history. Barnett finished 5th in the field of mostly NCAA Division 1 athletes. Not to be out done, the men's Distance Medley Relay was next up for EOU, and the quartet of Hans Rolle, Dustin Cloud, Ryan Booth, and DJ Flores came through in fine style. They easily surpassed the NAIA auto qualifying mark with a dominant win with a time of 10:09.57. That time is the second best in school history behind an All American quartet in 2002. Rolle lead off on with a 1200 meter leg and pretty much blew the race open when he stormed into the lead with 100 meters left to hand well in front of a BSU runner. Cloud held the lead through his 400 leg, Booth blew the race open on the 800 leg and Flores put it away with a solo 1600 meter leg. The Women's DMR followed the Men's race and gave the Mounties their 3rd National Qualifying mark in as many events for the evening with a time to 12:38.08. Laura Hansen led off with a hard fought 1200 leg handing off to Talissa Baldovino on the 400 leg. Sarah Hanchett ran a strong split in the 800 and Christine Eckestien closed things out with a strong 1600 leg, coming very close to catching 2nd place BSU at the end. They finished with the 3rd fastest time in school history as well. Kimmy Moore closed out the evening for the Mounties with a very well run 200. She won her heat with a life time best for the 200 and the 4th best time in school history with a time of 26.93. The second day of competition produced two more auto qualifiers, two school records, and four provisional qualifiers. The two auto qualifiers came from Alma Garcilazo and Robbie Haynie. Garcilazo picked up the lone win of the day for the Mounties with her 2:15.89 in the 800m, while Haynie made his EOU debut and put on a quite a show in the Pole Vault. He finished third with a jump of 17-0.75, which was also a new school record. Rolle, Booth, and Flores all came back from their fine performances the night before with provisional qualifiers. Flores and Booth finished 2nd & 3rd in the mile run, while Rolle won his heat of the 800m with a strong kick over the final lap. The Mounties fourth provisional qualifier came from Ashley Michelson, as she just surpassed the standard. Barnett’s best throw was less than an inch behind Michelson’s, and just missed the mark. In her EOU debut, Brittany Simms, set a new school record in the 60m dash with a time of 8.04. The Mounties will have a week off before heading back to Nampa for the BSU team scored meet on February 11th & 12th. |
