Mounties Wrap Up Season With Strong Performances At NAIA Championships
Edwardsville Illinois, May 21-23— The EOU Track & Field Teams sent 21 athletes to the NAIA Outdoor Championships, to compete in 15 individual events and 2 relays. Day 1 of the championships was a busy one, and began with Lucas Ohmes, Ivan Staeheli, and Chris Hoppie competing the first day of the Decathlon competition. Staeheli produced his best first day score, driven by three lifetime bests and two more decathlon bests. He was in 6th place after the first day, with Ohmes closes behind in 7th. Unfortunately Hoppie reinjured his hamstring in the first event of the competition and was unable to finish. The story of the first day was the men’s Hammer Throw, with Chris Dilley, Quinten Baxter, and Mitch Wheelhouse all competing. All three athletes improved from their seeding, and produced their best throws of the season. Dilley came into the meet ranked third and launched a massive throw of 204’3” to finish 2nd, which was 12 foot lifetime best, destroyed the school record, and earned his second All-American award. Baxter, who came in to the meet seeded 21st, launched an 8 foot personal best to finsh 7th. While Wheelhouse possibly threw his best series ever to finish 12th, and just miss his lifetime best. On the track for the men Cam Starner advanced to the final of Steeplechase, Terry Johnsen finished 22nd in the 10,000m, and the 4x800m relay team of Doug Benson, Fernando Morales, Jeff Roy, and Andrew Perri just missed making the final. On the women’s side Marcella Bosch finished 8th in the women’s 10,000m, while Christine Eckstein and Sara Bates both competed well but came up just short of making the final in the 1500m. In Pole Vault returning All-American Cayla Weissert was unable to clear a height, as she was running faster down the runway than she is used to. On Day 2 Ohmes used his typical stong second day in the decathlon to move up and finish 3rd in the competition, earning All-American honors in the event for the 3rd consecutive year. One the few Mountie athletes to ever earn three awards in the event. Staeheli competed well and used a strong final event to secure 8th place, and score a valuable point for the team. Baxter came back from his strong performance in the hammer to compete in the Shot Put, and threw a good series with several throws around 51 feet. On the women’s side the 4x400 relay team of Alma Garcilazo, Grace Deboodt, Orie Gamez, and Kimmy Moore smashed the school record they set at the conference meet with a time of 3:55.51. Unfortunately the just missed making the final. Day 3 got off to an early start with Katie Clapp competing in the Marathon. She fought warm, humid conditions and terrible blisters on her feet to finish 17th, up one spot from last year. In men’s Steeplechase Cam Starner produced another strong run, as he closed well to finish 8th in 9:18, right at his lifetime best. The final competitor for the Mounties was Dilley in the Discus throw. He entered the competition seeded 21st, and came out with a 9 foot personal best and an 8th place finish. The men’s squad finished the meet with 19 points, good enough for 16th place. The women’s finished tied for 61st with 1 point.
Mountie Men And Women Finish Second At Cascade Conference Championships
Gresham Oregon, May 7-9— The EOU Track & Field teams turned in very impressive performances at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championship Meet. When all was said and done Mountie athletes won eight events, had 27 top 3 finished, set three meet records, set three school records, and qualified seven more athletes for upcoming NAIA Championship. The meet started on Thursday evening with the first day of the multi event competitions, the discus throws, and 10,000m races. After the first day of the heptathlon competition Samantha Boyd, Jessianne Heley and Erin Ontko all performed well and were in 4th, 6th, and 7th places respectively. While in the Decathlon Ivan Staeheli and Chris Hoppie occupied the top two spots after the first day, with Asa Miller in 5th. The Mounties competed well in the Discus competitions. For the women Becky Unger finished 6th, and Becky Mickelson threw a big personal best to finish 8th. On the men’s side Quinten Baxter moved up from his 8 seed to finish 4th, with Chris Dilley and Mitch Wheelhouse rounding out the scoring in 7th and 8th respectively. The evening concluded with some fine performances in the 10,000m races. For the women Kendra Stone improved her best time by over 90 seconds to finish 3rd, and just missing the provisional qualifier. Katie Clapp was also in the scoring with her 7th place finish. There was only one Mountie in the men’s 10,000m, but Terry Johnsen ran an outstanding race, pushing the pace late to finish third and his the automatic qualifier for NAIA championship. The Mounties continued to roll on the second day of the championship. In the Heptathlon Boyd held onto the 4th spot, while Heley moved up to 5th, and Ontko finished 7th. In the Decathlon Hoppie and Staeheli traded positions to take the top two spots. Both their scores should qualify them for NAIA Championships, while Asa Miller finished 7th. In the throws the Mounties nearly pulled on big upsets in the men’s and women’s hammer competitions, as Trisha Harshberger and Dilley both held the top position entering the final found, before big throws slipped them both to second place. While in the women’s pole vault Cayla Weissert won the competion, while Allison Huguet, Madison Stapelton, and Julie Butterfield all jump season best marks. On the track the men’s and women’s 4x100m relay teams both finished 2nd. Marcella Bosch turned in a fine performance as she won a scorching fast 1500m, her fourth strait title in the event, to set new meet and school records, while Sara Bates ran a big personal best to finish 3rd, and Christin Eckstein finished 6th. The mounties also had impressive showings in the men’s and women’s 400m races. In the women’s race Alma Garcilazo, Grace Deboodt, and Kimmy Moore finished 2nd, 5th, and 6th respectively. While the men’s race the trio of Andrew Wise, Andrew Perri, and Fernando Morales swept the top three spots. In the men’s steeplechase Cam Starner ran big lifetime best to win the race and set a new meet record, with Forrest Lumpry running a 18 second personal best to finish 4th. Both squads entered the final day of the meet with second place secure, and they continued to pull away from the rest of the competition as the shot putters set the tone for the day. In the men’s competition Baxter threw a personal best to win the competition, while Dilley improved nearly six feet to finish 5th. Wheelhouse also threw a personal best to finish 9th. For the women Ashlee Mickelson threw a personal best to finish 3rd. Miller came back after the decathlon to set a personal best and win the high jump, and in the women’s triple jump Butterfield had a impressively consistent series to finish 4th. All her jumps were within 9 inches, and five were within 2 inches. The mounties also saw success on the track. In the women’s 800m Bates ran another big personal best to finish 3rd, setting a new school record in the process. While in the men’s 800m Perri used a blistering kick to finish 2nd, with Doug Benson, Jeff Roy, and Carlos Quintana in 5th, 6th, and 8th places respectively. The meet concluded with exciting races in the 4x400m relays. The women’s squad of Garcilazo, Deboodt, Moore, and Orie Gamez set a new school record and hi the NAIA automatic qualifier with their second place finish. Not to be out done the men’s team of Morales, Wise, Perri, and Adam Miller dominated the race, winning by four seconds and destroying the school record. Overall the Mounties turned in what is arguably the best conference meet performance in the programs history, as both teams finished a strong second place. The Mounties will have next weekend off to prepare for the NAIA Championships May 21-23 in St. Louis, Missouri.
Mounties Qualify Men’s and Women’s 4 x 800 Relays, Tune Up For Conference Meet
Boise Idaho, May 1— The EOU Track & Field teams tuned up for the upcoming Conference Championship at the Bronco Twilight Meet hosted by Boise State. The highlight of meet was the men’s and women’s 4 x 800m relays teams both exceeding the automatic qualifier for the NAIA Championships. The women’s team of Alma Garcilazo, Christine Eckstein, Marcella Bosch, and Sara Bates finished close behind a conference foe and eclipsed the auto standard by nearly seven seconds; setting a new school record in the process. While the men’s team of Fernando Morales, Jeff Roy, Doug Benson, and Andrew Perri reached the qualifying mark by nearly three seconds despite being the only team in the race. Outside of the relays there were several other strong performances. On the women’s side the throws squad had a big day. In the hammer throw Trisha Harshberger threw a season best and Mary Beth Nash threw a personal best. While Becky Unger launched nearly a five foot personal best in the discus. In the sprinting events Kimmy Moore ran a personal best in the 400m, and Melissa Abesa ran a personal best in the 200m. The men’s throws squad also had a big day. Quinten Baxter hit the auto qualifier in the hammer throw, to go along with his shot put qualifier, and also threw a big personal best in the discus. Not be out done, Chris Dilley launched a big throw in the hammer, setting a new personal best by six feet and nearly broke the school record. On the track Chris Hoppie won the 110m high hurdles and Andrew Wise ran a personal best in the 200m; while middle distance runners Fernando Morales and Andrew Perri came back after the relay to run personal bests in the 400m and 200m respectively. Next up the Mounties will be in Gresham, Oregon May 7 - 9 for the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships.
Mounties Win Ten Events, Qualify Three and A Relay For NAIA Meet At Saints-Cavaliers Invite
Gresham Oregon, April 25— Despite cool and often rainy conditions the Mountie athletes competed well, as they won ten events, took the top two spots in two events, swept the top three spots in another. Additionally, seven new Mountaineers qualified for the conference meet. On the women’s side Christine Eckstein and Sara Bates led the charge in the 1500m, as Eckstein won the race with Bates close behind in second place. Both athletes reached the automatic qualifying time for upcoming NAIA championship meet. In the 800m the Mounties took the top three spots. Alma Garcilazo won the race, with Bates in second, and Eckstein in third. Garcilazo later teamed up with Grace Deboodt, Orie Gamez, and Kimmy Moore to win the 4 x 400m and qualify for the NAIA championship. Cayla Weissert was also an event winner on the women’s side as she tied for first in the Pole Vault. On the men’s side the Mounties won six events, led by Cam Starner in the Steeplechase who won the race in dominating fashion with a new personal best and NAIA automatic qualifier. The Steeplechase was the other event the Mounties took the first and second spots, as Forrest Lumpry ran a personal best to finish second. In the men’s Shot Put Quinten Baxter won his second consecutive competition. Other event winners for the Mounties 4 x400m relay team, Andrew Perri in the 400m, Terry Johnsen in the 5000m, and Lucas Ohmes in the Pole Vault. Next up the Mounties will be in Boise Idaho on May 2 for the Bronco Twilight meet.
Bosch Shatters School Record At Oregon Relays
Eugene Oregon, April 24— Marcella Bosch took full advantage of the opportunity to compete in the Oregon Relays as she dropped another 26 seconds off the school record in the 5000m she set just three weeks before. She was able to get out of trouble early and position herself towards the front of the main pack. She stayed there the entire race, moving up over the second half to finish 5th in 16:46. So far this year Marcella has dropped 62 seconds off her personal best, 50 seconds off the school record, and recorded the fastest time in the history of the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
Mounties Take Advantage Of Good Weather At Home Meet
La Grande Oregon, April 16 -18— The Mountaineer Track & Field saw the best weather of the season over the weekend, and took advantage to record strong marks. The meet kicked off with the multi event competitions on Thursday and Friday. Four Mountie women competed in the heptathlon competition, and all put up good marks. Kimmy Moore won the event with the fourth best mark in school history. She was followed by Samantha Boyd, Jessianne Heley, and Erin Ontko. In most years Moore’s mark will qualify for the NAIA Championship meet. Four Mounties also competed in the Men’s decathlon, as Lucas Ohmes, Ivan Staeheli, Chris Hoppie, and Asa Miller took the 2nd - 5th places in the competition. Ohmes’ mark should qualify him for the NAIA meet, while Staeheli and Hoppie will also have a good chance at qualifying. Saturday saw the conclusion of the meet, the best weather of the three days, and several strong performances. The women’s team picked up 11 victories, including Moore who came back after the Heptathlon to win the 100m hurdles in a seasons best time. Cayla Weissert had the performance of the meet, as she destroyed the school record and easily qualified for the NAIA meet in the Pole Vault with a jump of 12-0. The female sprinters also put on a show as every athlete ran a seasons best, with the highlight being the 1-2-3 sweep of the 200m. Another highlight of the meet was Becky Unger, who won the Discus with lifetime best throw. The men’s team saw similar success as they won seven events. Quinten Baxter and Chris Dilley continue to lead the throws squad. Baxter won the Shot Put, through a season best in the Discus, and just missed a NAIA auto qualifier in the Hammer Throw; while Dilley won the Discus and was second in the Hammer throw. In the sprints, Drew Wise continues to run well, winning the 200m and recorded the fastest split on the 4x400m relay. Next up the Mounties will be in Gresham, Oregon on April 25th for the Saints & Cavs Invite.
Mounties Compete In 2nd Annual WAOR Meet
Spokane Washington, April 11— The EOU Track & Field teams competed in the 2nd Annual Washington vs Oregon Duel or WAOR. The meet, hosted by Spokane Community College included four teams from Washington and four teams from Oregon. Despite cold and wet conditions for a good portion of the meet, the Mounties had several strong performances. In the women’s 400m hurdle race Kimmy Moore turned in a great performance, just missing the school record and the NAIA automatic qualifier. She also finished 6th in the 100m hurdles, led off the 5th place 4x100m relay, and anchored the winning 4x400m relay. In the 1500m Marcella Bosch dominated the race from the start, winning the race and adding the NAIA provisional qualifier to go with the two auto marks she already had. Making her Mountie debut Ashlee Mickelson threw well in the Shot Put, moving into the 5th spot on the all time list. On the men’s side Chris Dilley had a big throw in the Discus, just missing the NAIA automatic qualifier and setting a new personal best by over 7 feet. Drew Wise competed in the 400m, 100m, 200m, and 4x400m relay, putting up solid marks even with the 400m and 100m as consecutive events in the meet. Overall the Mounties finished 3rd out of the 8 teams on the women’s side, and 7th on the men’s side. Next up the EOU Track & Field teams will host their second meet of the season, with the EOU Invite on April 18th.
Mounties Get Four Qualifiers For NAIA Meet and One School Record At Willamette Invite
Salem Oregon, April 3 & 4— The Eastern Oregon University Track & Field Teams sent a small squad of distance runners to the Willamette Invitational and came away with one NAIA auto qualifier, three NAIA provisional qualifiers, fourteen qualifiers for the conference meet, and one school record. Marcella Bosch turned in the performance of the meet, running a 36 second personal best of 17:12 in the 5000m race. Which smashed the school record by 24 seconds, and earned her second NAIA auto qualifier of the season. Bosch came back the next day to run a 2:18 800m, and strong 400m relay leg as well. Also in the 5000m Christine Eckstein ran a big personal best of 18:20. She finished 4th in her heat, and her time was a provisional qualifier for the NAIA meet. Bosch and Eckstein then teamed up with Alma Garcilazo and Cami Hernandez in the 4 x 400m relay. They nearly came away with the upset victory after leading much of the race thanks to a strong opening leg by Garcilazo. On the men’s Terry Johnson and Cam Starner both earned NAIA provisional qualifying marks. In the 10,000m run Johnson turned in a fine performance to finish 9th in 32:09. His time was one of the better freshman performances for the event in the programs history. Starner got his qualifier in the 3000m Steeplechase. He led much of way before finishing third in 9:33, just off the auto qualifier. Also in the Steeplechase Forrest Lumprey made his debut, running very well and earning a qualifier for the conference meet. In the men’s 1500m Doug Benson and Jeff Roy both earned conference qualifying marks. On Saturday the Mounties got strong performances in the 800m from Fernando Morales and Andrew Perry. Morales ran nearly a two second personal best, and Perry making his EOU debut ran a conference qualifying time. Next up the Mounties will be in Spokane for the WAOR Classic. A meet that features four teams from Washington and four teams from Oregon.
Mounties Host Annual Blue and Gold Meet
La Grande Oregon, March 20— The Mountie track teams kicked off spring break by hosting the annual Blue and Gold meet Friday afternoon. In addition to the split Mountaineer squads Northwest Nazarene and Treasure Valley also participated in the meet. The EOU women won nine events and finished 2nd in eight others, while the men won five and finished 2nd in six. The Mountaineer women got strong performances from three freshman; Orie Gamez, Kimmy Moore, and Alma Garcilazo. Games achieved qualifying marks for the conference championship meet in the 100m and 100 hurdles, Moore added a qualifying mark in the Javelin, and Garcilazo reached the standard in the 400m and 1500m races. They each qualified for the conference meet in at least three events. For the Mountaineer men Chris Hoppie lead the charge hitting the conference qualifying mark in 4 events; the 110 hurdles, long jump, shot put, and discus. Additionally Chris Dilley and Mitch Wheelhouse both improved upon their NAIA championship qualifying marks in the hammer throw from last weekend. After this meet the EOU women have 21 athletes qualified for the conference meet in 47 events, and the men have 12 athletes qualified in 27 events. Next up the distance runner will be at the Willamette distance carnival on April 3rd, and the entire team will be in action on April 11th in Spokane for the WAOR Meet.
Mounties Get Three Automatic and Two Provisional Qualifiers At NNU Open
Nampa Idaho, March 14— The EOU Track & Field teams got the outdoor season off to a good start at the NNU Open, as Mountie athletes won 13 events, came in second in 10 others, and got five national qualifying performances. On the women’s side Marcella Bosch ran an NAIA automatic qualifier , winning her debut 10,000m race with the second best time in school history. Kimmy Moore won the 100m and 400m hurdle races and finished was a member of both relays that finished 2nd. The other event winner on the women’s side was Orie Gamez in the 200m, and she was also 2nd in the 400m. On the men’s side Chris Dilley and Mitch Wheelhouse hit the automatic qualifying mark in the hammer throw, while Quinten Baxter hit the provisional marks in both the shot put and hammer throw. The throws squad set the tone for the meet as Wheelhouse, Baxter, and Dilley swept the shot put, discus, and hammer. While Ivan Staeheli won the 400m hurdles. Next up the Mounties will host the first of two meets on Friday March 20th. |
