Mounties Announce Signees For 2008-09.   List of Signees

 

 

Mounties Tune Up For Conference Championships At Bronco Twilight

 

Boise Idaho, May 2— The Mountaineer Track & Field Teams traveled to Boise to compete in the Bronco Twilight as part of their final preparations for the upcoming Cascade Conference Championship Meet, and there were strong performances on across the board.  On the women’s side Chelsee Harmon won her heat and ran a big lifetime best in the 400m hurdles of 1:06.51.  The 1500m was a good event for the Mounties.  Stephanie Windle also dominated her heat and ran a lifetime best of 4:49.47 and not far behind Christy Pletan ran a big lifetime best, breaking 5:00 for the first time in 4:58.70.  In the other heat Marcella Bosch ran a season best of 4:49.48.  In other track events Melisa Abesa ran a one second personal best in the 200m, and Kasie Gillespie ran well in her first open 400m.  Trisha Harshberger and Grace DeBoodt competed well in the throwing events.  Harshberger finished 4th in the Hammer Throw, while DeBoodt finished 7th in the Javelin.

On the men’s side Quinten Baxter lead a strong performance from throws squad.  In the shot put Baxter threw a lifetime best of 50-2.75 and surpassed the provisional mark for the NAIA championships.  Baxter then came back to lead the charge in the Hammer Throw with his 10th place finish.  Not far behind, Andy Munsy threw a lifetime best of 163-3 to move closer to the automatic qualifier, and Jason Dunten threw a season best.  On the track the 800m was the event of the meet as three athletes ran lifetime bests, and a fourth ran a season best.  Freshmen Jeff Roy ran a smart race and closed well to win his heat in a big personal best of 1:57.93, while Cam Starner and Troy Blackburn also ran personal bests and just miss breaking the two minute barrier.  Other strong performances included Andrew Wise running a strong 200m with a time of 22.87, and Adam Goulet in the 400m with a time of 50.46.

Next up the Mounties will be back in Gresham on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championship Meet.

 

 

Benson, Windle Hit Automatic Qualifying Marks

 

Gresham Oregon, April 26— For the second meet in row the Mounties were able to take advantage of warm weather and came away with two automatic qualifiers for NAIA championship meet next month.  Stephanie Windle lead the way for the women in the first track race of the day, the women’s steeplechase, finishing second, surpassing the automatic qualifier, and just missing her own school record.  Christy Pletan finished third in the race in her first ever steeplechase.  In the 5000m Marcella Bosch cruised to victory as she was in the lead for good shortly after the start.  The Mounties also had a strong day in the sprints.  Chelsee Harmon and Kasie Gillespie finished 3rd and 4th in the 400 hurdles and Grace DeBoodt finished 2nd in the 400m and ran a strong 200m.  The 4 x 400m relay team of Dani Murphey, Harmon, Melisa Abesa, and Gillespie ran a season best of 4:12 to finish 3rd.   DeBoodt lead the way in the field events with a provisional qualifier in Javelin throw and finishing 4th in the event, while Cayla Wiessert finished 2nd in the pole vault.  In the Discus Tiffany Ulmer, Becky Unger, and Kayla Burrus all threw season best marks.

On the men’s side Doug Benson had the performance of the meet finishing a close second in the 1500m with a lifetime best and NAIA automatic qualifier of 3:54.22.  In the steeplechase Troy Blackburn and Cam Starner swept the top two spots and Justin Dean finished 2nd in the 5000m.  Adam Miller lead a slew of 5 Mounties in the 400 hurdles with a 3rd place finisher, Lucas Ohmes had good showings in the 100m and 110m hurdles finishing second in both events, both 4 x 400m relay teams finished in the top 6.  Peter Fry won the men’s long jump with a personal best of 21-7.5.  Ohmes was also busy in the field events finishing 4th in long jump and pole vault.  Other strong performances included Quentin Baxter and Andy Munsey finshing 4th and 5th in the hammer throw, Justus Gray finished 4th in the high jump, and Gary Truman finished 5th in the long jump.  Baxter also threw a personal best in the shot put to finish 5th.

Next up the Mounties will be at Boise St. on Friday to tune up for the conference championships.

 

 

Mounties Take Advantage Of Warm Weather

 

La Grande Oregon, April 12— The Eastern Oregon University Track & Field teams finally were able to compete in warm weather, and they took full advantage.  In the men’s 1500m Doug Benson ran a 6 second personal best to win in 3:57.29.  His time was a NAIA provisional qualifier and one of, if not the fastest 1500m ever run on the EOU track.  The Mounties also competed well in the jumping events, as Kirk Miller won the Long Jump in 22-10.5 to lead a 1 - 4 sweep and surpass the NAIA provisional qualifier.  In the Triple Jump Peter Fry finished 2nd with a NAIA provisional jump of 46-2.5, while Lucas Ohmes won the Pole Vault and just missed the NAIA automatic qualifying mark.  Other good performances on the men’s side include Freshman Jeff Roy getting his first collegiate win in the 800m, Nathan Schmidt leading a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100m and a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the 200m, Justus Gray winning the High Jump, and Lane Bailey just missing the NAIA provisional qualifier in the Javelin throw.

There were also several strong performances on the women’s side.  In the jumping events Shauna Dahlin won the high jump, while freshman Courtney Schmidig jumped personal bests in both the long and triple jumps.  In the Pole Vault Mary Wright jumped a season best of 9-0 and just missed a lifetime best of 9-6.  On the track Stephanie Windle dominated the 1500m from the start winning by 6 seconds and came back to run a good 800m and a strong leg on the 4 x 400m relay.  Other strong performances include Marcella Bosch, Christy Pletan, and Chelsee Harmon all running well in the 800m and personal best hammer throws by Rachel Jackson, Marybeth Nash and Trisha Harshberger.  Harshberger’s throw was also a NAIA provisional qualifier.

The Mounties will have a week off before traveling to Portland to compete in a meet hosted by Mount Hood CC and Concordia.

 

 

Mounties Compete Well In Cool, Wet Conditions At Willamette Invitational

 

Salem Oregon, April 4-5— Once again cool and wet conditions met the EOU Track Teams as they traveled to Salem to compete in the Willamette Invitational; one of the biggest meets in the northwest.  Friday evening saw the hammer throws and all the distance races from 1500m through 10,000m, as well as the top sections of the 800m.  In the hammer throw the men’s squad got thing rolling placing 3 athletes in the top 6 of the competition.  Quinten Baxter lead the way with a 3rd place finish and teammates Andy Munsey and Jason Dunten were close behind in 5th in 6th respectively.  On the women’s side Trisha Harshberger threw well finishing 4th in the competition.

The Distance races also saw several good races, and 5000m was a particularly strong event as five athletes ran lifetime bests.  Freshman Christy Pletan survived a collision with another runner and fall just before the finish to win the first heat in a 15 second lifetime best.  In the final women’s heat of the night Marcella Bosch ran an outstanding race for a 17 lifetime best and NAIA automatic qualifier with a time of 17:48.  In the men’s 5000m Carlos Quintana, Justin Dean, and Doug Benson all ran lifetime bests.  In the 800m Adam Goulet took the race out hard and nearly lead wire to wire as he finished 4th in the closely contested race just  0.24 seconds behind the winner.  Other strong performances in the distance carnival include Fernando Morales and Jeff Roy in the 1500m, Morgan Saltenberger and Katie Clapp in the 10,000, and Stephanie Windle and Cam Starner in the Steeplechase.

On Saturday the Mountaineers saw cool, wet, and windy conditions that hindered performances; however they competed well.  In the field events the javelin, men’s triple jump, and women’s high jump were highlights of the meet.  In the triple jump Kirk Miller placed 2nd with a jump of 46-0.5, which surpassed NAIA provisional qualifier and is the second best jump in school history.  Peter Fry also jumped well finishing 7th in the completion.  In the women’s high jump Shauna Dallin finished in a tie for 2nd place, and in the Javelin Lane Bailey finished 5th in the men’s competition and Grace DeBoodt finished 6th in the women’s competition. 

There were also several good performances Saturday on the track.  Despite terrible sprinting conditions Gary Truman ran lifetime best in the 100m of 11.22 seconds, and Lucas Ohmes tore up the corner in the 200m to win his heat in 23.43.  In the 800m Zach Heath and Jeff Roy both came back to run strong, as they both finished 2nd in their respective heats.  The men’s relay teams both  ran solid early season marks, as the 4 x 100m team finished 2nd in 43.26 and the 4 x 400m finished 3rd in 3:24.5.  The women had a tough day on the track.  However, Dani Murphy ran a good 100m and Christy Pletan came back to run well in the 800m.

Next up the Mounties will have their final home meet of the season on Saturday.

 

 

Gillespie, Ohmes Win Linfield Multi Events

 

McMinnville Oregon, March 24-25— Seven members of the EOU track & field teams gave up a couple days of spring break to compete in the Linfield Multi Events.  On the women’s side Kasie Gillespie dominated the competition with a score of 4,342 points, despite being flat on Monday, and finished in the top 3 of every event.  She won two events, finished 2nd in two event, and 3rd in three events.  Joining Gillespie in the competition were Cayla Weissert, finishing 10th in her first ever Heptathlon, Erin Ontko in 14th, and Carla Hoppie in 16th.

On the men’s side Lucas Ohmes used a strong second day to take top honors in the Decathlon with 6,436 points, which included a lifetime bests in the Pole Vault with a jump of 15-3, and javelin with a throw of 182-4.  His jump in the vault equaled the NAIA provisional mark, and his javelin throw was just off the provisional mark.  Chris Hoppie finished 3rd in the competition with 6,258 points, and won the 110 hurdles and 1500m.  Joining Ohmes and Hoppie in the competition was Freshman Nathan Humphreys, who finished 11th in his first ever Decathlon.

 

 

Mounties Hold First Home Meet

 

La Grande Oregon, March 21— The EOU Track & Field teams split into two squads and hosted TVCC in the home meet of the season.  The coaching staff divided the teams into the EOU Blue and EOU Gold teams to change things up and have a little fun as they headed into spring break.  They responded with several strong performances.  On the women’s side Cayla Weissert lead the way in the Pole Vault with a personal best and NAIA automatic qualifying jump of 11-6.  While in the hammer throw Rachael Jackson continues to show improvement as she surpassed her previous best throw by over 10 feet.  In the sprints Melisa Abesa was a double winner in the 100m & 200m and Chelsee Harmon won the 400m.  Distance standout Marcella Bosch won the 1500m, then came back to finish 2nd in the 200m.

On the men’s side Quinten Baxter tacked on another 9 feet to his NAIA automatic qualifier to win the hammer with a throw of 177-0, while his teammate Andy Munsey, who has improved 22 feet in the last two weeks, just missed the provisional qualifier.  In the 110m hurdles Chris Hoppie and Lucas Ohmes scorched the track taking the top two spots in 14.85 and 15.14 respectively, both personal bests.  Despite the chilly weather Nathan Schmidt ran personal bests in the 100m and 200m to win both events.  While, Doug Benson swept the distance races with dominating performances, and teammate Jeff Roy finished second in both.

For the most part the Mounties will be off for spring break, however the multi-event athletes will be competing on Monday and Tuesday at Linfield College.

 

 

Mounties Open Outdoor Season At NNU Open

 

Nampa Idaho, March 15— The Eastern Oregon University Track & Field teams kicked off the outdoor season with a small squad, due to the upcoming finals week, at the NNU Open.  Despite chilly weather there were several good performances.  The Throws squad lead the way, as the Hammer Throw was the highlight of the meet.  Trisha Harshberger got things going by winning the women’s competition with throw of 143-8. Three freshman, Rachael Jackson, Becky Unger, and Cayla Burris threw well in their first hammer competition.  On the men’s side Quinten Baxer, a transfer from Clackamas CC, threw a NAIA auto qualifier and personal best to finish second with a mark of 168-1.  His throw is also 5th on the EOU All Time list.  The sprint crew performed well with second place finishes from Melisa Abesa and Nate Schmidt.  Even with the cool weather Schmidt just missed his personal best in the 100m and set a new best in the 200m by over 4 tenths of a second.  The distance crew took a different approach to the meet, as every runner competed in the 3000m to focus on running as a team.   The approach was successful.  In the women’s race all three athletes competing ran a personal best; Christy Pletan, Katie Clapp, and Rachael O’Reilly all ran personal bests.  There were also several personal bests on the men’s side, as the closed well over the second half of the race to take 5 of the top 8 spots in the race.

Next up the Mounties will host Treasure Valley Community College in a small home meet on March 21.  Action gets underway at 4:30 p.m.
