Mounties Open 2012 Season At Bronco Classic

Nampa Idaho, February 4—  The Mountaineer Track & Field teams opened their 2012 season at the Bronco Classic hosted by Boise State, and got several strong performances.

For the women, Sophomore Kadie Booth helped get the ball rolling for the Mounties in fine fashion on the track by qualifying for the finals of the 60 meter dash along with Senior Kelsey Kinzer. Both individuals ran life time bests in the prelims, then came back to top those marks in the finals. Booth’s finals mark of 8.03 edges the EOU school record (set last year by Brittany Sims) of 8.04. Kinzer’s mark of 8.19 seconds sits at #4 on the EOU All Time list.  Booth and Kinzer came back later in the meet in the 200, along with Senior Kimmy Moore, and ran well. Booth and Kinzer ran 1-2 in their heat, while Moore won her heat. Booth’s 26.46 moves her to 3rd on the EOU all-time indoor list.  Moore’s 26.55 puts her at 4th and Kinzer’s 26.78 is 6th.  Senior Alma Garcilazo rolled to a 5th place finish in the women’s 800, hitting the NAIA auto qualifier with her time of 2:16.35.  This will be her fourth trip to the NAIA National.  Karlee Coffey made a rare foray into the shorter distances and ran a strong mile to slip under the NAIA Provisional qualifying standard with a time of 5:13.33, she also ran the first 800 of her career.  Turning in a time of 2:29.52, which is third on the EOU indoor list.  In other events, Kimmy Moore ran the second fastest time of her life in the 60 hurdles, just 2 hundredths of a second off her life time best. Sarah Beck matched her personal best in the Pole Vault with a jump of 9’6.25”.  Allison Rodgers jumped 15’8.25” in the long jump, and Allison Escobar ran 28.46 in the 200 and 65.12 in the 400. The 200 was an indoor PR for Escobar. Volleyball player, Leigh Anne MacCarthy made her indoor debut running a very fine 3000 in 11:06.75.  The women wrapped up the competition with a solid performance in the 4 x 400 relay. The team of Moore, Booth, Garcilazo and Escobar closed out the meet with the third fastest time in school history and a hard fought 2nd place finish in second heat.

Robbie Haynie started the men’s competition off for the EOU men in the 60 meter hurdles, setting a new personal of 8.65 seconds.  He came back in the finals to edge that mark with a time of 8.63, which is 4th on the EOU all time list.  In between rounds of the hurdles, Haynie jumped 16’8.75” to finish 3rd in the Pole Vault. He saved his best performance of the meet for the triple jump, where he placed 4th, setting a new school record in his first indoor triple jump competition in a Mountie uniform with a jump of 46’9.5”. The mark is the 9th best in the NAIA, and just 1.5” off the NAIA Auto mark.  Joining Haynie on the EOU National Qualifying list is senior Brian Bragg. Bragg ran a very fine tactical race to run a life time best of 4:19.78 in the mile. The mark is almost 7 seconds faster than he has ever run and won the second heat. Bragg’s mark ranks 3rd on the EOU all time indoor list.  He came back later in the meet to run 2:01.44 and just miss his indoor PR in the 800.  Also on the track, despite fighting illness making the rounds this week, Sophomore Grant Wilson ran a strong 400 in a rough and tumble heat to record a mark of 52.45 and then come back to edge teammate Taylor Owens in their heat of the 200, 23.35 to 23.60.  In the field events, Freshman Travis Simpson and Junior Asa Miller jumped 6’2.25” in the high jump to open their season.

Also in the field events, the throwers had a quality day, putting two guys in the final of the shot put and three in the final of the weight.  In the shot, Jake Wilcox led the way with a 6th place finish of 45’9.75” with Carson Hendryx in 9th with a mark of 41’11.75”. In the weight it was red shirt Freshman Trevor Barrett led the way with a 7th place finish of 51’ 1.75. Barrett was followed in 8th and 9th and by Hendryx and Wilcox with marks of 48’ 3.5” and 45’9.25”. They were joined by transfer Max Van Fossen with a mark of 43’10.5”.

Next up the Mounties will be back in Nampa on February 10th & 11th for the Boise State team meet.

Haynie, Coffey Hit NAIA Qualifiers At Early Season Meets

Robbie Haynie and Karlee Coffey opened their 2012 seasons as the Jackson’s Invite and Washington Invitational, with impressive early season results.

Haynie competed in three events, recording two NAIA National qualifying marks three indoor personal bests.  First up for was the HJ, were he set an indoor PR of 6'8.25" to finish second in a field of mainly NCAA Division 1 jumpers, and match the NAIA Auto Qualifier. He cleared the same height as the winner, finishing second based on misses. His previous indoor best was 6'7.5".  Shortly after the HJ, Haynie ran in the 60 meters hurdles and placed 7th overall with a PR of 8.75 seconds,  knocking over a quarter second off his previous best. While he qualified for the finals in the 60 hurdles, we elected to have him pass up the finals to prepare for the Pole Vault.  That proved to be a good choice, as jumping in a very strong field, Haynie raised his indoor PR, and school record, from 17' 2.75" to 17' 6.5" to finish second.  His jump equaled his outdoor best from the 2011 NAIA National meet back in May.

Karlee Coffey was the lone Mountaineer female competing this weekend, and she did her racing at the prestigious U. of Washington Invitational. Just one of four non NCAA Division 1 or post collegiate athletes competing in the 3,000 meter run. She ran very strong to finish 6th out of 16 competitors in the second of three heats. Coffey's time of 10:05.95 is her second fastest ever, behind her National Champion run at last years NAIA Indoor National meet, and easily qualifies her for this years meet.

Up next, the team will open the season at the Bronco Classic on February 4th.
