Mounties Send Nine To NAIA Championships

 

Nine members of the Mountaineer Track & Field team will be competing in the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships.  Those competing will be:

Blackburn Qualifies For Steeple Final, Haltiner 6th After Day 1

 

Fresno California, May 25— Most of the Mounties at the NAIA National Meet were in action on the first day, and there were many performances close to season bests.  In the men’s Steeplechase Troy Blackburn Qualified for Saturday’s final in a personal best time of 9:22.46.  Adam Cooper and Michael Herriman both competed in throwing events today and both finished 12th.  Adam had a best throw of 169’10” in the hammer throw and Michael threw the Javelin 185’9”.  Both marks were near season bests.  Competing in the 400m Matt Lane missed qualifying for the semi-finals with a time of 49.25. 

On the women’s side Whitney Haltiner is in great position after the first day of the Hepthatlon, currently sitting in 6th place.  She ran 15.80 in the 100 hurdles, high jumped 5’3”, threw the shot put 33’3.75”, and ran 27.49 in the 200m.  Chelsy Wheelhouse finished 9th in hammer with a throw of 157’3”, just missing scoring the first points of the meet for the Mounties.  In the 800m Kyle Janssen was just off her personal best in 2:17.77, missing the semi-finals by 2 spots.  Tomorrow Whitney Haltiner will compete in the last three events of the Heptathlon, Erin Gilkison will be in action in the discus throw,  and Marcella Bosch will running the 5000m prelim.

Haltiner Finishes 7th In Heptathlon

 

Fresno California, May 26— Whitney Haltiner added two more season bests to the two she had yesterday and finished 7th in the Heptathlon, just missing All-American.  Her score of 4,444 points is a 244 point improvement on her previous score, and remains the second best in school history.  Going in the 800m she was in 5th, but a personal best 2:35.07 wasn’t quite enough to stay in the top 6.  She was just 22 points behind 6th and 38 from 5th.  In the women’s discus throw Erin Gilkison was just off her personal best with a throw of 133’9”, finishing 17th in the competition.  Marcella Bosch also competed in the 5000m preliminary.  Her time of 18:46.32 was not quite fast enough to make the final. 

Troy Blackburn will be the lone Mountie competing on the final day of the championships tomorrow the Steeplechase final.

Blackburn Finishes 8th In Steeplechase

 

Fresno California, May 27— Troy Blackburn wrapped up the 2006 NAIA Outdoor Championships for the Mounties with an impressive performance in the Steeplechase.  He finished in 8th place in 9:24.92, his second best time, just behind his performance in the prelims on Thursday.  He also scored the lone point for the men’s team that finished tied for 54th as a team.  The women’s team finished 52nd in the team race.
