Mounties Get Good Start To Outdoor Season At Icebreaker
March 4, McMinnville Oregon— The Mountaineer Track and Field teams got an early start to the outdoor season this year at the Linfield Icebreaker and they got many good performances. The women’s hammer throw was the highlight of the meet, as EOU took 1st, 3rd, and 6th places. Chelsey Wheelhouse won the event with a throw of 147’11”, which is 10 feet farther than she opened up with last year. Sara Biechler had an outstanding day throwing a 20 foot personal best to finish 3rd with a throw of 134’07”, and Trish Harshberger best throw was 126’7”. Shauna Dahlin also had a great day in the high jump finishing 3rd with a jump of 5’1” and nearly clearing her lifetime best. The 5000m was also a highlight of the meet with Rian Finney, Sara Bates, and Maggie Driscoll all running well. Driscoll finished with a time of 20:57.18 in her first outdoor track meet ever. On the men’s side Ryan Browne ran an outstanding 400m hurdles finishing 3rd just off his lifetime best in 57.21. He might have gotten it if hadn’t struggled with the last hurdle. Daniel Sipko, Morgan Saltenberger and Kenny Thissell all ran well in the 5000m. Daniel was just off his lifetime best, while Morgan and Kenny both ran lifetime bests. The next outdoor meet for the Mounties will be March 25 in La Grande, and they will wrap up the indoor season this coming weekend at the national meet in Johnson City Tennessee. |

Wheelhouse and Cooper Hit Qualifiers In Hammer Throw
March 25, La Grande Oregon— The Mountaineer Track and Field teams got their first two nationals qualifiers at the EOU Open, with hopefully several more to come. Chelsy Wheelhouse had the honor of being the first to qualify in women’s hammer throw with a seasons best of 154’4”. The throwing events followed her lead and continued to be the highlight of the meet for the women’s team. Trish Harshberger threw a lifetime best in the hammer of 129’4”. The Mounties also got wins in the Discus from Erin Gilkison with a throw of 115’7”, and Whitney Haltiner in the Javelin with a throw of 90’6”. Other highlights for the women were Shauna Dahlin’s lifetime best in the long jump with 15’3.25”. Adam Cooper led the way for the men’s team hitting the automatic qualifier in the hammer with a throw of 169’4”. Matt Lane ran a good 400m on this cold and wet day winning in 49.45. Troy Blackburn ran a great race to win the 3000m in dismal conditions with a time of 9:28.0h, and Zach Heath was close behind in his first ever 3000m race with a time of 9:32.8h. Tom Dillon jumped well to win the high jump in 6’4”, and 4x400m relay won a close race in 3:29.88. The Mounties have a weekend off for spring break and will be back in action on April 7th at the Willamette distance carnival and April 8th at the NNU Invite. |

Bosch, Blackburn Hit Qualifiers At Willamette Distance Carnival
Salem OR, April 7— Six Mounties made the trek to Salem for the Willamette Invite Celebration of Distance on Friday night and left with two provisional qualifiers. Marcella Bosch ran a great race in the 5000m to win her heat and finish 5th overall with a time of 18:16.83. Rian Finney finished 9th in the 10,000m with a time of 40:55.54. On the men’s side Troy Blackburn ran aggressively throughout the 3000m steeplechase to finish 4th with a provisional time of 9:31.07. Other Mounties competing were Zach Heath who made is steeple debut with a time of 10:09.92, Morgan Saltenberger finished 12th in the 10,000m with a time of 33:52.79, and Daniel Sipko in the 5000m with a time of 16:09.02. |

Gilkison Wins Two Events, Many Set Season Bests At NNU
Nampa ID, April 8— The Mounties were in action at their second meet of the weekend and Got many great performances. Erin Gilkison lead the way for the women’s team as she picked up victories in the shot put and discus with throws of 35’2” and 121’8” respectively. In the hammer throw Chelsy Wheelhouse threw a 3 foot season best to finish 2nd. Whitney Haltiner and Shauna Dahlin competed in the Heptathlon. Haltiner finished 3rd with a score of 3944 points, the second highest scoring athlete in school history. During the course of the event she also just missed breaking the school record in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.48. Dahlin finished 4th with a score of 3535 points. Other strong performances included Kyle Janssen in the 800m with a time of 2:23.81, and Rian Finney coming back after a 10k the night before and a long drive to finish 2nd in the 5k in 19:56. On the men’s side Matt Lane won the 200m in 22.82, and finished 2nd in the 400m in a season’s best time of 49.09. Ryan Browne finished 2nd in the 400m hurdles in personal best time of 56.64. The Mountaineers also came out victorious in both relays. Winning the 4 x 100m in 43.75, and the 4 x 400m in 3:24.61. Other highlights of the weekend include Adam Cooper in the hammer with a throw of 157’4”, Michael Herriman in the Javelin with a throw of 174’8”, and Mason Giem in the 800m with a time of 1:59.63. The Mountaineers are in action next weekend at the Central Washington University Spike Arlt Invitational in Ellensburg. |

Mounties Perform Well In Cold, Wet Conditions At Spike Arlt Invite
Ellensburg WA, April 15— The Mountaineer Track & Field teams made the trek to Ellensburg Washington to compete in the Central Washington University - Spike Arlt Invite. Conditions were wet, cold, and windy but they still turned in good performances. Make her season debut Emily Booth had a big day finishing 4th in the long jump and 7th in the high jump with marks of 15’11.75” and 4’11” respectively. Kyle Janssen finished 5th in the 800m in 2:23.3 and Abby Morrison ran a good 400 in 1:01.53. They both came back to run strong legs on the 4x400m relay. Chelsy Wheelhouse overcame on off day to finish 2nd in the hammer throw and just missed winning the event. The men’s team also had several strong performances. The throwers had a good day with Adam Cooper and Mitch Wheelhouse both made the finals in the hammer and discus throws. Michael Herriman also made the finals in the Javelin throw. Matt Lane finished 2nd in the 400m in 49.61. The distance runners also got several heat winners. In the 800m Ben Corely and Daniel Sipko each won their heat, and Zach Heath won his heat of the 1500m. After a hard crash in the 400 hurdles Ryan Browne bounced back and ran a strong leg on the 4x400m relay team that finished 2nd. |

Haltiner Finishes 2nd, Dahlin 4th At CCC Multi Event Championships
Ashland Oregon, April 17-18— The Mountie women got a good start to the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships coming away with 13 points in the heptathlon. Whitney Haltiner improved her second best score in school history by nearly 300 points ending with 4200 points. She was strong in all the events and had season bests in the javelin, shot put, high jump, and the 800m. Shauna Dahlin was just off her score from the week before finishing with 3514 points. She was near her season bests in all 7 events and had season bests in the shot put and 200m. Heading into the conference meet the Mountie women are in second place trailing OIT by one point. |

Small Squad Gets Seasons Bests At Oregon Invite
Eugene Oregon, April 21-22— Seven Mounties made the journey to Eugene for the Oregon Invite and came away with two season best performances. In just her second 5000m Marcella Bosch went out hard and was able to hold on to run a season best, 18:16.78. Kyle Janssen also competed for the Mountie women, finishing 3rd in her heat of the 800m just of her season best in 2:23.17. On the men’s side Mason Giem closed strong in the 800m to run a seasons best 1:59.47. Troy Blackburn ran a good steeple in cold windy conditions, finishing just off his lifetime/season best. Other athletes competing in the meet were Matt Lane in the 400m, 49.76; Keith Bauer in the 400m, 51.52; and Ryan Browne in the 400 hurdles, 57.73. A 4x400m relay also competed in the meet finishing in 3:27.48. |

Mounties Perform Well At Cougar Invite
Pullman Washington, April 22— Most of the Mountaineer Track & Field teams were in Pullman Washington competing in the Cougar Invite. The women’s distance runners highlighted the meet. In the 1500m Sara Bates and Laura Clayton both ran big season bests finishing in 5:10.67 and 5:12.44 respectively. Becca Mielke and Marika Dobos both ran seasons best in the 800m. Emily Booth jumped seasons bests in the high jump, 5’3”, and triple jump, 33’7.5”. Abby Morrison performed well in the 200m and 400m with times of 27.56 and 1:01.03. On the men’s side Michael Harriman threw a big season best in the Javelin launching it 175’10”. Also in the throwing events Adam Cooper was just off his season best the hammer with a throw of 168’4”, and had season best in the discus, 145’11”. Another highlight of the meet was John Aguirre running a lifetime best in the 800m in 2:03.11. Next week the Mounties will be in Boise tuning up for the conference meet on May 5 in Gresham. |

Mounties Get Many Personal Bests At YMCA Invite, Haltiner Breaks Record and Gets Automatic Qualifer
Boise Idaho, April 28-29— In their last tune up before the conference meet the Mounties recorded close to thirty lifetime or season bests. Adam Cooper got things started Friday night uncorking a lifetime best throw of 179’6”, this throw is also the second best in school history. Mitch Wheelhouse also had a big day in the hammer with a throw of 144’1”. On the track Daniel Sipko held on from a fast first lap to run a pr of 4:08.07 and John Aguirre nearly won his heat with a pr of 4:11.44. Matt Lane improved his conference leading time in the 200 with a time of 22.17. The strong performances continued to roll in Saturday. Talon Jayo and Gary Truman got is started with season bests in the 100m with times of 11.11 and 11.73 respectively. In the 800m Mason Giem ran a season best of 1:58.11; Daniel Sipko and Ben Corely both ran lifetime bests. Daniel lead his heat wire to wire winning in 2:00.19, and Ben ran 2:05.76. In the Javelin Mike Harriman threw another pr with a throw of 176 feet. On the women’s side Whitney Haltiner turned in the performance of the weekend breaking the school record and hitting the automatic qualifier in the triple jump with a mark of 37’5.25”. Marcella Bosch ran a 7 second pr in the 1500m finishing 4th in 4:49.35. Haltiner, Joelle Bain, and Abby Morrison swept the top 3 spots in their heat of the 200m. In the 400h Chelsea Harmon and Shanua Dahlin each ran the event for the first time ever and both turned in impressive times. Harmon ran 1:10.65 and Dahlin ran 1:11.19. Saturday the 4x400m relay team turned in the fastest time of the season by far in 4:07.83. Other strong performances include Kyle Janssen’s lifetime best in the 800m, 2:20.34; Erin Gilkison won the javelin with a throw of 109 feet; and Emily booth jumped a 5” pr in the long jump with a mark of 16’4”. The Mounties will be in Gresham on Friday for the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships looking to bring home the titles.

Mountie Men and Women Compete Well, Come Up Just Short of Conference Titles
Gresham Oregon, May 5— The Mountie Men and Women Track & Field teams continued their momentum from last weekend and came up just short of bringing home two team titles from the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships. Between the two teams there were 4 individual champions, 1 relay champion, and numerous season and personal bests. The women’s team was just 3.5 points behind OIT in the team race, with Concordia 4.5 points behind. Chelsy Wheelhouse led a 1-2-3 sweep in the hammer throw, as she was followed by Sarah Biechler and Trish Harshberger. In the women’s 800m Kyle Janssen led wire to wire to win in a personal best 2:17.06, and Marcella Bosch was close behind finishing second in 2:18.59. These are the 3rd and 5th best times in school history. Bosch also won the 1500m in a personal best 4:47.50, leading all but about 100m. Whitney Haltiner added to her 2nd place finish in the Heptathlon by finishing 2nd in the Triple Jump, 4th in the Long Jump, and 6th in the 100 hurdles. Erin Gilkison also scored in 4 events finishing 4th in the Discus, 5th in the Shot Put, 6th in the Javelin, and 6th in the Triple Jump. The men’s team finished 2nd again this year in the team race just 7 points behind Concordia and 3 points ahead of Southern Oregon. Michael Harriman launched a huge throw in the Javelin finishing 3rd. His throw of 190’7” is the 3rd best in school history, an automatic national qualifier, and a personal best. Matt Lane won the 400m in 48.90 improving his school record by .01, and finished 2nd in the 200 in 22.09. The 4x100m relay team of Gary Truman, Matt Lane, Keith Bauer, and Talon Jayo also came away victorious in a season best 42.91. Troy Blackburn finished a close 2nd in the steeplechase with a time of 9:25.01; a personal best and an automatic national qualifier. John Aguirre had an impressive double running 4:09.00 in the 1500m and 51.50 in the 400m. According to Coach Welch both teams competed exceptionally well. Next up a few athletes will in Seattle next weekend chasing national qualifiers, for the NAIA Championships May 25-27. |

Monmouth Oregon, May 12— A small squad made the trip to Western Oregon University looking for good performances, and came away with several. Erin Gilkison threw a 5 foot personal best in the Discus with a throw of 137’2”, which is also a provisional qualifier for the outdoor championships. She also threw the javelin 117’9”, an 8 foot seasonal best. The 4x400m relay team dropped another half second off their season best with a time of 4:05.28. Sarah Biechler and Trish Harshberger both threw personal bests in the hammer throw. On the men’s side John Aguirre ran 3 second season best in the 800m in 2:00.26, just missing the two minute barrier. Michael Harriman threw another personal best in the javelin improving is NAIA automatic mark to 192’6”. Adam Cooper had a nice tune up for the national meet throwing the hammer 170’10”, and the discus 145’4”. In the Discus Mitch Wheelhouse was just behind with a throw of 145’3”. Wrapping up the meet the 4x400m was just off their season best in 3:22.58. The Mounties have a weekend off before heading to Fresno California for the NAIA Outdoor Championships May 25-27. |
