MEN WIN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP, WOMEN FINISH SECOND

 

La Grande Oregon, May 11-12— After losing the lead in the next to last event and trailing Concordia University by seven points entering the the 4x400m the Mountie team of Matt Lane, Ryan Browne, Chris Hoppie, and Adam Miller needed to win the race and hope for some help.  They lead the entire race, with Miller holding of OIT and Southern Oregon in the final stretch.  Concordia slipped to 6th resulting in tie for the conference championship, their second in the last five years.  In addition to the 4x400m relay the Mountie Men had four other event winners.  The 4x100m relay team of Nathan Schmidt, Lane, Lucas Ohmes, and Miller won setting a new school record in 42.59.  In the discus throw Mitch Wheelhouse won by an inch with a throw of 149-6, leading three mounties in the top 8.  Chris Hoppie was a double event winner, taking  the top honors in the long jump with a mark of 22-5, and easily distanced the field in the 110 hurdles with a season best time of 15.10.  Hoppie also had the second highest point total of the meet among the male athletes.  Other strong performances include Adam Goulet running a gutsy 800m finishing 5th, despite suffering from Bronchitis, Matt Lane finished 2nd in the 200m and 400m, and Troy Blackburn picked up valuable points finishing 3rd in the steeplechase and 5th in the 5000m.  The entire throws squad also performed well; in addition to the discus they had four scorers in the hammer throw, three in the shot put, and two in the javelin throw.

 

On the Women’s side Concordia ran away with the team title and the Mounties were the runners up for the second year in a row easily distancing themselves from third place OIT, and setting two school records along the way.  They book ended the meet with school records.  In Friday the 4x100m relay team of Danielle Reiss, Danielle Murphy, Kasie Gillespie, and Chelsee Harmon finished 3rd in 49.31, which is a NAIA provisional mark.  Then on Saturday the 4x400m relay team of Reiss, Grace Deboodt, Gillespie, and Murphy finished 2nd in 3:57.93 a NAIA automatic qualifier.  Marcella Bosch turned in the performance of the meet, destroying the fields in the 1500m and 800m in 4:44.29 and 2:16.85 respectively, both NAIA provisional marks.  She earned athlete of the meet for her performances.  In addition to her contributions to the relays Kasie Gillespie finished 2nd in the long jump and 3rd in the 100 hurdles.  Similar to the men, the women’s throws squad also had big meet.  Trisha Harshberger and Lacy Coble finished 1, 2 in the hammer throw with a marks of 145-8 and 139-10 respectively.  In the javelin Grace Deboodt finished 4th with a season best and NAIA automatic qualifier with a throw of 135-11; she also finished 3rd in the 400m dash, her first of the season.  Tiffany Ulmer lead three scorers in the discus and two in the shot put.  In the heptathlon Erin Ontko had a very good meet with 250 point improvement in the heptathlon, and had personal bests in 6 of the 7 events.

 

Overall during the meet, Mountaineer athletes set 57 lifetime or season best.  Eclipsing the mark of 55 during last years conference meet.

Welch Earns Coach of the Year, Bosch Athlete of the Meet

 

La Grande Oregon, May 12— Ben Welch and Marcella Bosch were honored after the Cascade Conference Championship Meet.  Welch shared the coach of the year on the men’s side, and Bosch was named the female athlete of the meet after her dominating performances in the 1500m and 800m.

Mounties Have Busy First Day At NAIA Championships

 

Fresno California, May 24— Every Mountaineer athlete that qualified for the NAIA Championships competed during  the opening day.  The Multi Event athletes got things started early.  Chris Hoppie and Lucas Ohmes got off to a fast start in the 100m of the Decathlon and were sitting in 3rd and 5th place respectively after the first event.  Both athletes competed well throughout the day.  After the first day Hoppie is sitting in 5th place with 3,497 points, while Ohmes is in 10th with 3,128 points.  In the women’s Heptathlon Kasie Gillespie also competed well.  She was in 9th place after the first event, then moved to 7th after the second event.  At the end of the day she was still in 7th place with 2,687 points, 24 points ahead of her first day total from her qualifying score.

After the Multi Event athletes were finished for the day the rest of the team began competing.  In preliminary action Matt Lane and Adam Goulet advanced to the semi-finals.  Lane finished 5th in his heat of the 400m in 48.75, advancing on time to the next round.  In the 800m Adam Goulet won his heat in a personal best time to 1:53.67, earning an automatic pass to the  next round.  Marcella Bosch, Adam Miller, Grace Deboodt, and the women’s 4x100m relay also competed on today.  Deboodt, in her first national meet, finished 19th in the Javelin with a throw of 121-4.  Bosch finished 8th in her heat of the 1500m, Miller finished 6th in his heat of the 400m hurdles in 56.07, and the 4x100m relay team finished 9th in their heat in 50.53. 

Tomorrow the Hoppie, Ohmes, and Gillespie will wrap up the Decathlon and Heptathlon, Lane will compete in the 400m semi finals, Goulet will compete in the 800m semi finals, and the women’s 4x400m relay will compete in the preliminary round.

Gillespie, Ohmes Earn All American Honors  On Second Day of  NAIA Championships

 

Fresno California, May25— The Mountie track teams got their first points of the NAIA Championship meet and had two All Americans on the second day.  Kasie Gillespie jumped the 17-8.25 in the Long Jump, the third best in school history, to move into All American contention and never relinquished her spot.  She finished the heptathlon with 4,641 points, good enough to finish 6th and move into the second on the all time list.  In the men’s Decathlon Chris Hoppie got off to a great start by moving into 4th after the 110m hurdles.  However, after a no height in the pole vault he faded to 10th.  After sitting in 10th most of the meet, Lucas Ohmes won the Pole Vault with a jump of 14-3.25 to move into 4th place with two events left, before finishing 5th with 6,314 points.  A personal best and Top 5 mark.  The Mounties got other strong performances as well.  In the 400m semi finals Matt Lane was unable to advance to tomorrows final, however he broke his own school record with a time of 48.46.  In the 800m Adam Goulet finished 9th in his heat in 2:02.90, failing to advance to the final.  The women’s 4x400m relay ran the preliminary round, but was also unable to advance with a time of 4:02.53.

Over the course of the meet the Mountaineers had 6 performances that made the top 5 lists.

Welch Named Region Coach Of The Year

 

EOU Head Track Coach Ben Welch was voted by his peers as the NAIA Region 1 Men’s Coach of the year.
