Mounties To Open Season At Home
The Eastern Oregon University Track & Field teams will open their outdoor season by hosting the EOU Mini Meet. Other schools attending the meet will be Albertson, Treasure Valley CC, Northwest Nazarene, and Whitman. The tentative schedule is as follows:
All field events will open pit combined men and women. 10 a.m. with the Hammer, Jav, PoleVault and Long jump |

Mounties Perform Well At Home Meet
La Grande Oregon, March 24— The Eastern Oregon Track & Field teams got the outdoor season off to a good start at the EOU Mini Meet. There were competitors from EOU, Albertson, Northwest Nazarene, and Treasure Valley; as well as some unattached athletes. The meet had a modified format with limited running events and EOU athletes won 10 of the 28 events contested and had many good early season performances. Additionally, EOU athletes competing unattached won another 6 events. On the women’s side the throwing corps lead the way sweeping the top spots in all four events. Lacey Coble won the discus throw, Trish Harshberger won the hammer throw, Grace Deboodt won the Javelin, and Mary Beth Nash won the shot put. Danielle Reiss in the 200m in a personal best 26.68. Kasie Gillespie was double winner in the 100 hurdles and long jump. Chelsee Harmon won the 400h just minutes after running a 800m personal best of 2:30 on the relay. Cayla Weissert won the pole vault equaling her personal best of 11-0 and just missing the provisional qualifier. On the men’s side Zach Heath ran a well executed race to win the 1500m and running an eight second personal best with a time of 4:04.50. Ryan Browne was the other event winner edging teammate Adam Miller in the 400 hurdles 1:00.28 to 1:00.38 shortly after both athletes ran a leg on the 4x800m relay. Jason Dunten had also had a good day throwing a 15 foot personal best in the hammer throw with a mark of 150-8. Next up a small group will compete at the Stanford Invite March 30-31. |

Goulet Runs Provisional Qualifier At Stanford Invite
Stanford California, March 30-31— A small group of Mounties made the trek south to Stanford to compete in one of the biggest meets in the country. Adam Goulet lead the way running a provisional qualifying time for the NAIA Championship Meet in the 800m. His time of 1:53.74 was a lifetime best and the fastest time by a Mountaineer since 2000, and the 4th fastest in school history. Zach Heath also competed in the 800m running a season best of 1:57.65. The 4x400m relay team of Matt Lane, Chris Hoppie, Adam Miller, and Andrew Wise-Grittman finished with a time of 3:22.11, just two seconds off the provisional mark and the 5th best in school history. Other performances by the men’s team were; Matt Lane 49.94 in the 400m, Chris Hoppie 15.81 in the 110 hurdles, Adam Miller 56.67 and Ryan Browne 58.67 in the 400 hurdles, and Andrew Wise-Grittman 23.37 in the 200m. Four members of the women’s team also made the trip. The 4x400m relay team of Kasie Gillespie, Danielle Riess, Danielle Murphy, and Chelsee Harmon finished in 4:07.27, missing the all time top 5 list by 1.5 seconds. Other performances over the weekend were; Kasie Gillespie 16.15 in the 100 hurdles, Danielle Riess 1:01.40 and Danielle Murphy 1:02.25 in the 400m, and Chelsee Harmon 1:10.37 in the 400 hurdles. |

Hoppie Wins US Indoor Masters Championship
Boston Massachusetts, March 23-25— Mountaineer Carla Hoppie journeyed to Boston Massachusetts at the beginning of spring break to compete in the US Masters Indoor Championships. She won the national title in the women’s 50-54 pentathlon with 3,708 points, which was the 4th best score out of all the age groups. She got off to a good start scoring 832 points in the 60h with a time of 11.20. She high jumped 4-4.25 for 795 points, then long jumped 12-9.75 for 530 points. She closed well in the last two events to clinch the title with shot put of 33-2 for 795 points and ran 2:42.69 in the 800 for another 756 points. |

Mounties Off To Good Start At NNU Multi Event
Nampa Idaho, April 5— Four Mountaineers are in Nampa Idaho competing in a two day multi event meet, and they are sitting well after the first day. In the men’s decathlon Chris Hoppie had a fantastic start setting a multi event personal best in all five events, and is sitting in 1st place with with 3,496 points and Lucas Ohmes just behind in second place with 3,156 points. Both athletes have strong events on the second day, and have a chance to post scores that could hold up to qualify for the national meet. Additionally, Hoppie has a chance to break the 19 year old school record of 6,598 by Sean Steen. Kasie Gillespie and Erin Ontko are also competing in the women’s heptathlon. This is Ontko’s first Heptathlon, and her first time actually competing in some of the events, and she has 1,576 points through 4 events. Gillespie’s score of 2,663 puts her in a good position to post a score good enough to qualify for the NAIA Championship meet. |

Bosch Qualifies For NAIA Meet At Willamette Invite
Salem Oregon, April 6— The EOU Track & Field teams sent a small group of distance runners to compete in the distance carnival portion of the Willamette Invitational. Marcella Bosch turned in the performance of the night running a lifetime best of 18:05.35 in the 5000m. Her time also automatically qualified her for the NAIA Championship Meet in May. Laura Clayton was the other member of the women’s team who made the trip running a personal best of 12:13.59 in the 3000m Steeplechase. Zach Heath turned in the best performance of the night running his second lifetime best of the season in the 1500m and just missed breaking 4:00 finishing in 4:00.16. Four Mounties competed in the 5000m all between 15:50 and 16:10; Cam Starner finished 48th in 15:50.85, Doug Benson 54th in 15:57.91, Adam Goulet 56th in 15:58.81, and Justin Dean 62nd in 16:10.66. Josh Ego ran well through 4 miles of the 10,000m before stomach problems he been battling all day forced him to slow down finishing 10th in lifetime best of 32:56.22. Troy Blackburn also competed in the meet finishing 8th in 9:55.07. |

Hoppie Breaks School Record At NNU Multi Event
Nampa Idaho, April 6— Chris Hoppie continued his outstanding performance on the second day of the Decathlon at the NNU Multi Event finishing with a score of 6,718 points breaking the school record by 120 points and easily winning the competition. Somewhat overshadowed by the school record Lucas Ohmes also had an outstanding meet scoring 6,152 points, one of the 10 best scores in school history. In the women’s Heptathlon Kasie Gillespie came from behind to win with a score of 4,524 which is the second best mark in school history. Erin Ontko finished 6th in her first ever multi event competition with a score of 2,473. The scores for Hoppie, Ohmes, and Gillespie should hold up to qualify for the NAIA Championship Meet. |

Mounties Get Strong Performances At Northwest Nazarene Invite
Nampa Idaho, April 7— The Mounties wrapped up a busy weekend on a warm, windy day in the Treasure Valley with several strong performances. On the women’s side Danielle Riess ran a personal best of 13.18 to win the 100m despite a strong headwind and came back to finish 2nd in the 200m in 26.85, just off her season best. Coming off a successful basketball season and competing in her first track meet in 3 years Tiffany Ulmer was the Mounties top performer in the shot put and the discus with marks of 35-8 and 125-11 respectively. Other strong performances were Danielle Murphy in the 100m, Chelsee Harmon in the 200m, Cayla Weissert in the pole vault, and Alexis Loscutoff in the Triple Jump. One the men’s Mitch Wheelhouse won three events, the shot put with a throw of 44-7.50, the discus with a throw of 145-11, and the hammer with a throw of 154-0. His marks in the discus and hammer were personal bests, he also lead a 1-2-3 sweep in the discus. Matt Lane also won multiple events taking the top honors in the 100m and 200m. He rarely runs the 100m, but was able to run 11.60 into the wind and come back to run 22.64 in the 200m. Other strong performances were Adam Miller running 50.88 in the 400m, and Jason Dunten throwing 146-8 in the hammer throw.

Throwers Have Big Day At Spike Arlt Invitational
Ellensburg Washington, April 14— Despite cold and windy weather the Mountaineers turned in impressive performances and had several Top 5 marks at the Spike Arlt Invitational with 18 season or lifetime bests. On the men’s side Mitch Wheelhouse and Jason Dunten lead the way hitting the NAIA Provisional mark in the Hammer with lifetime bests of 158-11 and 158-7 respectively. Mitch also threw lifetime bests in the discus 150-9, and shot put 49-7.25 which is also the 4th best in school history. In the Javelin Freshman Lane Bailey threw the 5th best mark in school history and a three foot personal best in the javelin with a throw of 181-3. Other strong performances on the men’s side include Josh Ego winning the 5000m in a personal best of 15:50.29, leading wire to wire; and Cameron Starner made his Steeplechase debut finishing third in 9:59.0. The throws squad was also the top story on the women’s side. Tiffany Ulmer competed in all four throwing events and threw the discus 130-3 which is the fourth best mark in school history. Bethany Bortz also threw well in the Discus with a 14 foot personal best of 117-6. Freshman Cayla Weissert jumped well to win the pole vault clearing 10-11.75 and just missing the provisional mark. The 4x100m relay team of Danielle Reiss, Grace Deboodt, Danielle Murphy, and Chelsee Harmon ran the 5th fastest time in school history of 50.5. |

Women’s 4 x 400m Relay Breaks School Record At WSU
Pullman Washington, April 21— The 2007 Mountaineer Track & Field teams continued to put their mark on the school’s all time list at the WSU invitational. The women’s 4 x 400m relay team of Danielle Reiss, Grace Deboodt, Kasie Gillespie, and Danielle Murphy set a school record finishing in 4:00.61. Early in the day the same four athletes finished second in the 4 x 100m relay in 49.94, the second best time in school history. Reiss also made the all time list individually running 59.92 in the 400m for 5th. Other notable performances included Marcella Bosch finishing 2nd in the 3000m run in 10:28.15 and a season best for Sara Bates in the 1500m of 5:05.21. Additionally, Cayla Weissert, Tiffany Ulmer, and Laura Clayton were just off their season bests that are currently on the all time list. Ulmer also threw a 20 foot lifetime best in the hammer throw. On the men’s side Zach Heath won the men’s 1500m with teammate Adam Goulet 0.7 seconds behind in 3rd as both athletes ran lifetime bests and dipped under 4:00. The 4 x 400m relay team of Adam Miller, Goulet, Matt Lane, and Chris Hoppie, finished second just behind the host school in their second best time of the season. Mitch Wheelhouse continued to lead the throws squad with another solid day, and Josh Ego and Cameron Starner both ran well in the steeplechase. Nathan Schmidt raced well and ran a lifetime best in the 200m of 23.03. In addition to his leg of the relay, Chris Hoppie had a solid day pole vauling 13-1.50 and long jumping 21-0.5. He also missed out on a lifetime best in the 110 hurdles due to a timing error. |

Mounties Get Many Strong Performances At BSU Twilight
Boise Idaho, April 27— The Mounties were able to take advantage of best weather conditions they have had all year; winning six events, setting two school records, and several other top 5marks. On the women’s side the 4x400m relay team of Danielle Reiss, Grace Deboodt, Kasie Gillespie, and Danielle Murphy cut just over a second of the school record they set last week finishing second in 3:59.48. On the 4x100m Chelsee Harmon joined Reiss, Gillespie, and Murphy to run the third best time in school history of 50.17. In the Javelin, Deboodt improved her season best to 126-8, remaining at 4th on the all time list, while Tiffany Ulmer threw 123-8 to move into 5th. Cayla Weissert won the pole vault with a jump of 10-11.75 with teammate Tenley Paul-Bowdin in second at 10-6, good enough for 5th on the all time list. Marcella Bosch and Danielle Reiss both ran life time bests and just missed the top 5 as Bosch ran 4:48.35 in the 1500m, and Reiss ran 26.05 in the 200m. On the Men’s side Matt Lane won the 400m breaking his own school record and missed the auto qualifier by .01 seconds in 48.55. In the 400h Adam Miller closed strong win the race in a season best and provisional qualifying time of 54.74. Lane and Miller were joined by Ryan Browne and Chris Hoppie in the 4 x 400m relay finished a close second in 3:21.81, which is third on the all time list. Hoppie also long jumped 22-7.25, which is the second best school history. Jason Dunten also had a strong showing in the hammer throw with a 6 foot personal best of 162-2, just missing the auto qualifier. |

Mounties Tune Up For Conference With Small Home Meet
La Grande Oregon, May 4— The Mountaineers hosted a second mini meet as a tune up for the upcoming conference meet, and as an attempt to achieve more qualifying marks for the NAIA Championship Meet. Despite cold and windy conditions there were several strong performances in limited events. There was one qualifying mark for the national meet. In the women’s pole vault Cayla Weissert cleared 11’3”, hitting the provisional mark, and had some good attempts at the automatic qualifier. A primary reason for the meet was a chance for EOU and Albertson College to go after the 4x 800m relay qualifier. Both the men’s and women’s teams came up a little short, but did compete well. Marcella Bosch and Adam Goulet turned in the fastest splits on their respective teams. The throws squad continues to improve; with five personal bests on the day. Additionally, in the men’s discus Mitch Wheelhouse equaled the 5th best throw in school history of 152’6”; missing the provisional qualifier by 1inch.
Next up the Mountaineers will host the Cascade Conference Championship May 11th and 12th, starting at 9:00 a.m. both days. |
