Mounties Get Two NAIA Qualifiers, One School Record At NNU Invite
Nampa Idaho, April 24— Today’s action at the Northwest Nazarene Invite was highlighted by a gutsy performance in the women’s 400 hurdles and a flyer in the women’s 800 and some other quality marks/performances despite cool, breezy temps. For the women, sophomore Kimmy Moore used a gutsy finish to drop a half second off her PR (64.92) from last year and close to a second off her season best of 65.35 in the 400 hurdles to surpass the NAIA Auto qualifying mark and break the school record. Moore battled down the home stretch with a College of Idaho runner to finish second. The other Auto qualifying mark came at the feet of Sarah Hanchett in the women’s 800. Running in her first open 800 of the season, the freshman dropped almost four seconds off her high school PR of 2:18.2 to finish second in a strong field with a very fine time of 2:14.54. One of the remarkable facets of her race was she ran a very even race- running the first 400 in 67.2 seconds and the second one in 67.3 seconds. In other action, the women’s team won 5 events: Alma Garcilazo was a double winner (400- 58.16, 200- 26.22), Moore won the 100 Hurdles (15.82), Grace Deboodt won the High Jump (5’1”) and Talissa Baldovino teamed up with Hanchett, Garcilazo and Moore to win the 4 x 400 relay in 3:56.93. In the field events, freshman McKinzie Anderson added to her outdoor season’s best in both the long jump (16’9 ¼”) and triple jump (34’7 ½”). Senior Marybeth Nash added a conference qualifier in the shot to go with her earlier conference qualifiers in the discus and hammer. All in all the women added 10 new conference qualifying marks to the list of EOU qualifiers- four in the 200 alone! In addition to Garcilazo’ winning performance, Grace Deboodt (26.86), Kelsey Kinzer (27.05) and Maddison Stapleton (27.10) all hit conference marks in the 200. Baldovino qualified for conference in the 400 (60.25), as did Kami Hernandez in the 800 (2:25.53) and Nancy Cardenas in her debut in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (12:16.70). On the men’s side, EOU had three event champions in Chris Dilley in the Hammer (193’5”), Ryan Booth in the 400 (50.05) and Drew Wise in the 200 (23.06). In other field event action, sophomore Maddison Stapleton jumped to a huge new PR (and an NAIA Provisional Qualifying mark) of 11’3”, up from her previous outdoor PR of 10’ 0”. The Mounties also turned in several strong performances on the track. Senior Grace Deboodt and Junior Melisa Abesa both put up strong marks in the 400, with Deboodt just missing her PR (set a the Conf. Meet last year) with a time of 59.39. Abesa smashed her open 400 PR with a time of 60.09. Both came back with strong 200’s as well. Junior Andrew (“Drew”) Wise, had a busy day, running a strong 400 (50.47) for second and 22.89 to tie with teammate Ryan Booth for the win in the 200. Wise also ran the 100 (the very next event after the 400) to finish 3rd in 11.54. Sophomore Jessianne Heley (68.89), Freshman Sierra Engler (68.94) and Freshman McKinzie Anderson (70.09) all ran strong in the 400 Hurdles. The two freshmen ran the longer college distance for the first time (High School Intermediate Hurdlers run 300 meters). Sophomore middle distance standout Ryan Booth had a very good day as well, crushing his previous PR of 50.80 in the 400 to turn in a strong 49.27. Interesting thing about the 200 was Booth and Wise were both in different heats and hit the exact same time. In the longer races, Freshman Kody Coxen ran two PR’s, in the 1500 (4:03.49) and 800 (2:00.60). Freshman Tyler June, coming off a lengthy illness late last term, ran to a new PR (2:02.63) in heat two of the 800 to win his heat. Terry Johnsen ran tough in the 5k for third and Justin Dean ran his first 5K of the year to qualify for conference. In the women’s distance race races there were some strong performances in the 1500. Freshman Nancy Cardenas won heat two with a very fine run of 5:03.10. Fellow Freshmen Talissa Baldovino (5:00.79) and Sarah Hanchett (4:51.85) both ran PR’s as well. The race however, belonged to 800 meter specialist Alma Garcilazo. The sophomore from Umatilla, in her second 1500 ever, pulled away late in the race to run 4:40.40 and win by 1.45 seconds. Her time is believed to be a track record and surpasses the NAIA Auto Qualifying mark by over three seconds. The meet ended with a stellar run by Engler, Hanchett, Baldovino and Garcilazo in the 4 x 400 relay. Engler put the team near the front on the opening leg (61.3 seconds) and Hanchett (59.6) put the Mounties in the lead for good, while third leg Baldovino opened the gap up with a very strong 59.0. As she did in the 1500, Garcilazo closed things in a big way running a monster leg at 55.8 seconds! Their time of 3:55.91 seconds is the second fastest in school history (behind the 2009 National meet squad’s mark of 3:55.51). More importantly, it surpasses the NAIA Auto time of 3:58.25 by a wide margin.
