Mounties Tune up for Conference at Pacific Twilight

 

Forrest Grove Oregon, April 29 & 30— Day one of the pacific twilight saw a small number of events and several quality marks by EOU athletes.  Contested on Friday night were the hammer, Javelin, steeplechase and 1500 meter runs for both genders.  Zach Seely and Michael Wanta both set life time PR's in the steeple while Nancy Cardenas ran a season best; while Kody Coxen squeaked out a new PR in the 1500.

In the field events, Allison Rodgers put together a fine tripple jump with an eighteen inch season best and seven inch personal best.  The hammer throwers had a solid to very good day, with Ashlee Michelson and Trevor Barrett both throwing about 3 foot PR's. Annie Barnett had a season and lifetime best to hit the NAIA provisional qualifying mark.  Barnett now has three NAIA qualifiers.

Day two of the pacific twilight saw one EOU record fall and another tied.  Alma Garcilazo tied the 20 year old EOU record in the 400 with her second place finish.  She also had a personal best in the 200m.  Garcilazo  was joined in the 200 by Cory O'Neil and Kadie Booth; both set season best marks.

The outright school record came from Robbie Haynie in the pole vault. His mark was also one of 14 meet and 11 stadium records to fall over the two days of competition.

Brittany Sims put her mark on the EOU all time list in the 400 Hurdles when she raced to an NAIA auto qualifier, and second best mark in school history.  Sims' fine performance came not long after she ran a conference qualifier in the open 400. 

In other running events, Taylor Owens added a conference qualifier in the 400 to go along with the 200 qualifier he snared earlier in the season.  Dustin Cloud improved on his season best in the 110 Hurdles with his third place finish.  Talissa Baldovino dipped under 2:20 in the 800 for the first time this season with a second place finish in her heat . Over all the 800 treated the team well, with Hans Roelle's, Tom Sheehy, and Zach Seely all running lifetime bests; and Jeff Roy ran a season best.  Roelle's time missed the NAIA Provisional mark by a mere three hundredth of a second. It is also 8th on the EOU all time list.

The 5,000 meter run also produced some quality marks as five out of seven Mounties ran personal bests. Isaac Updike, in his first track 5k raced to a third place finish. Updike easily surpassed the conference qualifier as well. Forrest Lumpry and Seth Lougee also ran personal bests and qualified for the conference meet.  In the women’s 5,000m Cristal Delgado slashed 43 seconds off her personal best to win her heat.

In the throwing events Andy Munsey ninth, Anne Barnett third, and Ashlee Michelson sixth all threw their way into the finals of the shot put.  Michelson and Trevor Barrett both finished sixth in the finals of the Discus too. Michelson's throw was a life time best and fourth on the EOU all time list.

 

 

Mounties Take Advantage of Good Weather and Produce Strong Performances at NNU

 

Nampa Idaho, April 23— Competing under sunny skies and fairly calm conditions in Nampa, Idaho at Northwest Nazarene, the Mounties had a number of quality performances and added some conference qualifying marks.

 Event winners for EOU at NNU were Cristal Delgado in the 10,000 meter run, her debut at the distance, and Justin Dean in the 5,000 meter run in a season's best 15:39.94. Dean's 5K was part of a quality double as earlier in the day he narrowly missed the conference qualifying mark with a personal best in the . 

Leigh Anne MacCarthy also joined Delgado in qualifying for conference in the 10K, while Alex Martinez and Josh Wise hit the men's conference mark in the 10K.  Like Delgado, this was the first 10k for all three athletes.

 Other new conference qualifying marks came from Brandon Powell in the High Jump, Chris Wilson with a big personal best in the 400, and Tyler June in 800. June ran a very good race to finish 3rd in with a new personal best.  On the Women's side new conference qualifying marks came from: Monique McKenzie in the women's steeplechase, Colby Patton in the 400 Hurdles, Talissa Baldovino in the 1500 , and Maddison Stapleton in the Pole Vault. Stapleton's mark was a season best and she also had some good attempts at the NAIA Provisional mark.

 Personal Best performances were also turned in by; Jason Hendricks in the hammer, Zach Seely, Brian Nelson, Seth Lougee, and Michael Wanta in the 1500.  Wanta also had a personal best in the 400 Hurdles.  Fellow LaGrande High product Allison Escobar ran a PR by a second in the 400m, and Union product Tom Sheehy ran 2:00.31 in the 800 for a new PR.  Other season's best marks came from Colby Patton in the 100 hurdles, Grant Wilson in the 400, Taylor Owens in the 400, and Chris Wilson in the 200.

 

 

Mounties Perform Well at Oregon Relays

 

Eugene Oregon, April 22 & 23— After a strong first day at the 2011 Oregon Relays, EOU Track and Field Athletes followed things up on day two with two school records and one new NAIA Provisional Qualifier.  Kimmy Moore got things rolling on Saturday for the Mounties with a stellar run in the 400 Hurdles to finish sixth overall, setting a new school record in the process.  Winning the second heat of the 400 Hurdles  was teammate Brittany Sims with a season best performance, as she just missed the NAIA Provisional mark.  Ashlee Michelson finished 6th in the Women's Shot Put with a personal best and NAIA Provisional mark . Her throw is also the third best in EOU history.  Moore later teamed up with Kelsey Kinzer, Cory O'Neil and Kadie Booth to run the second fastest 4 x 100 meter relay in school history to finish seventh; while Moore, Booth, O'Neil and Sims teamed up to finish sixth in the 4 x 400.  Alma Garcilazo provided the other EOU record, finishing seventh in the 800m.

Other Day 2 action included Moore in the 100 Hurdles; along with Booth, O'Neil, and Kinzer in the 100 meter dash.  Booth and O'Neil times are season's best and Kinzer's is a personal best.  Booth and O’Neil are now seventh and eighth on the all time list.  Ryan Booth finished second in the second section of the 800m, just missing the win, and finishing ninth overall.

Those performances came on the heals of a number of quality marks on Friday. Interestingly, the three EOU Steeplechaser's on Friday would have placed high in the top section on Saturday.  Forrest Lumpry won Friday’s section, with Isaac Updike third and Kody Coxen sixth. All three of those marks are in the EOU All Time list at fifth, eighth, and tenth respectively.  Other Friday highlights included DJ Flores winning his section of the 5,000m, with a personal best and third best in school history.   While, Karlee Coffey finished sixth place with a personal best and second best in school history.  After their performances, Flores and Coffey are currently leading the conference performance list.

 

 

Mounties Battle Weather to Get Strong Performances at Home Meet

 

La Grande Oregon, April 16— Despite some very soggy conditions, the EOU Track and Field teams had some quality performances today. Under alternating sunny skies, rain, and hard rain the Mounties were able to record a number of Personal records and add another NAIA Automatic qualifier.  They also improved upon an Auto qualifier while setting a school record, and added a provisional qualifier as well. Additionally, There were several marks that made it onto the EOU top 10 all time list, as well as some additional conference qualifying marks.

 In the filed events, Anne Barnett added an NAIA Provisional qualifying mark in the shot put, and a Cascade Conference qualifying mark in the discus. Barnett's shot put mark is also second on the all time list. She also slightly improved her season's best in the hammer .  In other field events, Trevor Barrett just missed the EOU all time list in the javelin, and Robbie Haynie added a conference qualifier in the Triple Jump.  This was the  first time he has Triple Jumped in 10 years.  His mark is also third on the all time list.  LaGrande native Tyler Nice also vaulted to a new PR in the Pole vault.

 On the track, Christine Eckstein put together a monster of an 800 to hit an NAIA Auto mark, smash her season best by 8 seconds and set a lifetime PR. Eckstien's 800 mark came on the heals of a huge run and school record by teammate Alma Garcilazo. Eckstein commented "I had know idea we were running that fast- I was just chasing Alma.”  Additionally, there were numerous personal best and conference qualifying marks recorded by the Mounties on the day.

  

 

Mounties Compete At Spokane Multi Events

 

Spokane Washington, April 11 & 12— At the end of the Spokane Multis held at Spokane Falls Community College, Robbie Haynie stood on top of the standings in the Decathlon, Dustin Cloud was 4th in the Decathlon and Allison Rodgers was 6th in the Heptathlon.

Haynie's point total of 6762 should easily qualify him for the 16 man NAIA Decathlon Field the end of May. His final score falls 180 points short of the school record.  Dustin Cloud's 5892 points will most likely leave him short of the point total needed to qualify, however he will get another shot at the Cascade Conference Championship meet in mid May.  Rodgers' first journey into the heptathlon netted her the 9th best Heptathlon mark ,3584 points, in EOU history and easily qualifies her for the conference meet.

 

 

Mounties Get Four NAIA Qualifiers at WAR Meet

 

Spokane Washington, April 9—The fourth annual Washington versus Oregon meet was held at Spokane Falls Community College today, with this years addition being the biggest and best yet.  Teams from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana competed as two teams;  with the schools from Washington scored together as one team and the remaining schools as another team.  Unlike the last two years, the weather was generally good, contributing to some quality marks.  Chief among them were four automatic qualifying performances for the Mounties.   These were; Anne Barnett threw a season's best in the Javelin, Alma Garcilazo in the 1500, Ryan Booth in the 800, and Kimmy Moore in the 400 hurdles.  Moore also broke her school record.  Garcilazo also just missed the qualifier in the 400m.

DJ Flores made his college debut in the 1500 to finish 2nd overall and narrowly miss the NAIA Auto, and Andy Munsey  had a strong day in the hammer to hit an NAIA Provisional mark as well.  In addition to the above marks, there were a number of other fine performances, including about 20 individual life time bests in a number of areas. There were also a number of new conference qualifying marks.

 

 

Mounties Get Strong Performances At Willamette Invite

 

Salem Oregon, April 1 & 2—Day one of the Willamette Invite/Charles Bowles Celebration of Distance is in the books an yielded some impressive results for EOU Track and Field.  Trevor Barrett got the meet off to a good start for EOU by throwing 15 foot season best in the hammer. Andy Munsey also threw well.  In other field action, Anne Barnett tossed her way onto the EOU all time list at #7 in the women's hammer, while Robbie Haynie surpassed the NAIA Auto Qualifying mark in the pole vault with a clearance of 16'2" for second place.

Distance races were the primary focus on Friday night.  On the Men's side, DJ Flores lead the way in his first ever track 5K with an NAIA Auto mark and the 4th fastest in EOU history. Also in the 5K, Kody Coxen, Brian Nelson, and Alex Martinez all surpassed the Cascade Conference Qualifying mark.  In the women’s 5k, Laura Hansen and Cristal Delgado both hit the conference qualifier.  In the women’s 1500m  Alma Garcilazo and Christine Eckstein both hit the conference qualifying mark, with Alma just missing NAIA auto qualifier.  In the Men's 1500; Ryan Booth, Jeff Roy, and Hans Roelle  all qualified for the Conference meet.  In the Men's steeplechase, all four Mounties Men ran very well, registering new personal bests and improving on their conference qualifying marks.  Isaac Updike recorded the 9th fastest time in EOU history, with Forrest Lumpry running the 12th fastest.  Zach Seely and Michael Wanta both ran very well too.  In the tough 25 lap 10,000 meter race, Terry Johnsen came close to the NAIA Auto, while in the women’s race, LaGrande native Karlee Coffey continued to burn up the track.  She too, 57 seconds off her own school record, and demolished the field as she won by one minute and 26 seconds- a full lap ahead of second place.

 

Day two of the Willamette Invite was mainly field events and sprints, and while the weather was not as nice as Friday, there were some quality performances.  In the field events, Robbie Haynie put together a quality high jump, surpassing the NAIA "B" standard and winning the event.  Ashlee Michelson had a quality weekend with a personal best in the hammer throw and fine performance in the discus  and a new personal best in the shot put.  Anne Barnett improved her season best in the Javelin by about a ,and had a fine throw in the shot put as well.  Jason Hendricks put together a great series in the Discus to improve his personal best by close to 8 feet.

On the track, Kadie Booth ran her way onto the EOU all time list for 100 meters, while LaGrande High grad Rachel Harris ran very well to win heat two of the 100 Hurdles and Kimmy Moore overcame a rough start to finish well in her heat of the hurdles.  Alma Garcilazo joined Haynie as an event winner today by running an excellent tactical race to win the 800 and earn an NAIA auto qualifier.  In the men’s 800 Ryan Booth hit the NAIA B standard to finish 4th.

Next up is the WAOR meet April 9th in Spokane where an estimated 16 teams are expected to participate.

 

 

Mounties Kick Off Outdoor Season At Northwest Nazarene Open

 

The 2011 Outdoor Track and Field began for EOU at Northwest Nazarene on a chilly, but overall pretty nice day- yielding some pleasant results in the process.  On the women’s side, most of the action was on the track rather than in the field, and a number of quality marks were recorded.  In the 4 x 100 relay. The quartet of Brittany Sims, Kadie Booth, Kelsey Kinzer and Kimmy Moore teamed up to run the 6th fastest time in school history and win the race over host NNU.  Three of thefour also came back to dominate the 100 meter dash with Sims winning, Booth third and Knnzer 5th.  Cory O’ Neil joined those three in the 100, finishing fourth.  Booh also won the 200, with O’Neil finishing third.

Moore and O’ Neil also were in the 400, with Moore just missing the win and O’Neil winning her heat to place seventh overall.   Sims and Moore then came back to finish 2-3 in the 400 Hurdles, with Sims recording the second fastest time in school history.  Allison Rodgers was all over the place as she competed in the Shot Put, Long Jump, High Jump, 100 hurdles and 4 x 400. In other field event action, Sarah Beck notched the 10th best Pole Vault mark in EOU history to qualify for conference.  Overall, the women had nine women record fifteen conference qualifying marks.  Cory O’Neil led the way with three individual qualifying marks (100, 200 and 400 dashes).

On the men’s side, much of the action came in the throws, where four throwers Andy Munsey, Jason Hendricks, Trevor Barrett and Tyler Bruck recorded 9 of the men’s 16 Cascade conference Qualifying marks between the Shot Put, Hammer and Discus. Munsey and Hendricks hit conference marks in all three events.  The Men’s distance races were highlighted by 5 conference qualifiers in the 3,000 steeplechase Isaac Updike, Forrest Lumpry, Zach Seely, Michael Want and Gus Titus. Updike’s time of 9:46.05 for second place is the fastest debut in the steeplechase by a Freshman in at least the last 20 years.  In the sprints, Tyler June notched the men’s other two conference qualifying marks in the 200 and 400, where he was fourth in the 200 and third in the 400.
