Mountie Women Win, Men 5th At Northwest Nazarene Invite

Nampa ID, September 10— The Mountaineer cross country teams got the season off to a great start at the Northwest Nazarene University Invitational.  The women’s team edged Boise State 42 - 46 to take the top spot despite missing Shawna Muchow, and the men finished 5th, only 3 points out of second place.  The women’s team was lead by senior Stephanie Colkitt who finished the 4k race in 14:39, and was followed closely be teammate Chelliey Corder in 5th, 14:47.  Rounding out the scoring was  Marcella Bosch in 13th, Nicole Woitovitch in 15th, and Kyle Janssen in 17th.  The entire women’s team did a great job of working together throughout the race, and they all finished well making up crucial points in the final stretch.

The men’s team also got the season off to a good start and the young squad will look to improve and build from this performance as they get more experience.  The Mountie men were led by Junior Josh Ego who put himself in a good position early and then moved up throughout to finish the 6k race 11th in 19:21.  Josh was followed across the line By Daniel Sipko, Jason Griffiths, and Troy Blackburn in 20th, 21st, and 23rd respectively.  John Agguire stepped up and into the 5th spot and rounded out the scoring in 29th place.

Next up the the Mounties will be in Seattle on September 17th for the University of Washington’s Sundodger Invitational.

Women 7th, Men 14th At Sundodger Invitational

Seattle WA, September 17— The Mountaineer women overcame a slow start and turned in another strong performance finishing in 7th  at the Sundodger Invite hosted by the University of Washington.  Stephanie Colkitt and Chelliey Corder are establishing a nice 1 - 2 punch as they finished in 11th and 17th places respectively over the 6 kilometer course, and only 10 seconds apart.  Stephanie was just two seconds off the school record with her time of 22:28.  The 3, 4, and 5 runners rounded out the scoring by finishing within 15 seconds of each other.  Nicole Woitovitch ran a great race to finish 58th, freshman Marcella Bosch finished 70th, and Shawna Muchow finished 72nd in her first race of the season after injuring her hamstrings.

The young Mountaineer men’s team had a rough outing, but was still turned in some good performances. Josh Ego and Troy Blackburn were battling illnesses, Jason Griffiths lost a shoe and got buried putting it back on,  and John Aguirre sacrificed himself trying to help Jason get back in the race.   Despite being sick, Josh Ego lead the team again finishing 45th, with personal best time of 26:00.  The gaps between runners, are what hurt the Mounties.  From 1 to 5 was one minute, which is good, but from 1 to 2 there was 52 seconds.  Daniel Sipko was the second Mountie across the line followed closely by Jason Griffiths, Adam Goulet, and freshman Zach Heath who had an outstanding performance in his first 8k running 27:00.

Next up the Mountaineers will be in Salem for the 31st Annual Charles Bowles Invite on October 1,which is the largest cross country meet west of the Mississippi River.

Women Finish 9th, Men Finish 15th Willamette Invitational

Salem OR, October 1— The Mountaineers battled the weather, other teams, and adversity at the Willamette University Charles Bowles Invitational and got the better of all three.  The 8th ranked Mountie women continue to improve and had another good showing finishing 9th out of 30 despite losing Chelliey Corder two miles into the race with an ankle injury.  Stephanie Colkitt paced the team again finishing 9th in a personal best time of 18:19.  Following Stephanie across the line were Nicole Woitovitch 48th (19:04), Marcella Bosch 55th (19:10), Shawna Muchow 68th (19:25), and Sara Bates 95th (19:52).  Kyle Janssen ran a lifetime best by nearly a minute finishing in 20:08 and according to coach Welch Becca Mielke and Laura Clayton both had good break throughs.

The young Mountaineer men’s squad took another step in the right direction, but the inexperience still showed in dealing with the size of the field.  Josh Ego was the first mountie across the line in 26:07 with Jason Griffiths just 1 second back. Adam Goulet, Daniel Sipko, and Zach Heath rounded out the scoring finishing in 26:47, 26:54, and 27:14 respectively.

The Mountaineer women’s team raced very well together, and turned in their best overall race of the season.  Stephanie Colkitt had an off day due to a heavy training cycle, but still lead the team with her 16th place finish.  Chelliey Corder, Marcella Bosch, Rian Finney and Shawna Muchow did a very good job throughout the race of working together.  Chelliey moved up well in the second half of the race to finish 3 seconds behind Stephanie Colkitt.  Bosch, Finney, and Muchow rounded out the scoring finishing only 17 seconds apart, with a 47 second 1 - 5 gap.  “Despite the slow times, I felt our women raced much better as a team than they have so far this year” according to coach Welch.   Marika Dobos earned the female athlete of the meet honors with her lifetime best performance of 20:34.

Next week the Mountaineers will be in Caldwell Idaho at the Alberson College ‘Yote Open.

Women 4th in Region, Win Conference; Men 5th in Region, 3rd in Conference

Portland OR, November 5— The mountaineers went to Portland looking for berths to the national meet.  Despite sloppy conditions the men ran their best race of the season, and the women overcame a slow first 800m to win their first Cascade  Conference Title since 1999.  After thinking they had went out too fast at the preview meet, the mountie women got out in the back of the field but were able to move up and finish with a very good chance of earning a trip to the national meet, however, they were not quite able to break up the top 3 teams.  The mountaineers were lead by their 1-2 punch of Stephanie Colkitt and Chelliey Corder who finished 15th and 16th with times of 19:09.24 and 19:09.55 respectively.  They had a great pack as Shawna Muchow, Rian Finney, Nicole Woitovitch, and Marcella Bosch were close behind in 24th, 26th, 31st, and 33rd places.  Hopefully the ladies will get the chance to compete at Nationals and make the necessary adjustments to run up to their full potential. They have worked very hard this fall, and competed quite well overall throughout the season, so we feel strongly that the best is yet to come.

The men had an outstanding team effort, and according to coach Welch many of the athletes their best race of the season.  Jason Griffiths finished 12th in 26:24 with Josh Ego 4 seconds back in 15th place.  Rounding out the top 7 finishers for EOU, were in order, Troy Blackburn 29th in his best race of the year, Daniel Sipko in 32nd in one of, if not his best race of the year, Adam Goulet in 39th, with another fine race, Kenny Thissell in 41st in an outstanding race and Zach Heath in 49th with a very good second half.

Both the men’s and women’s team will be playing the waiting game until Monday when the at large team and individual qualifiers are announced, hopefully the effort this weekend will be enough.
