Mountie Men Finish12th; Flores, Coffey Earn All-American Honors At NAIA Championships
Vancouver Washington, November 21— The Mountaineer Cross Country teams sent the men’s squad, and two female athletes to the NAIA Championship meet, and came away with several strong performances on the muddy course. The men’s team turned in one of their best performances of the season to surpass their 18th place ranking with a 12th place finish; just 17 points from 8th. DJ Flores and Forrest Lumprey continued their outstanding seasons. Flores finished 16th to earn All-American honors, while Lumprey just missed with his 33rd place finish. Rounding out the scoring for the Mounties were Devin White in 120th, Terry Johnson in 151st, and Ryan Booth in 160th. Justin Dean and Kody Coxen also competed finishing 197th, and 244th respectively. On the women’s side Karlee Coffey ran a great race, positioning her self towards the front early and holding on to finish 12th and earning All American honors. Alma Garcilazo also competed in the race finishing 228th.
Men Third, Women Fourth At Conference Championships
Springfield Oregon, November 7— The Mountaineer cross country teams battled quality fields and a muddy course at the 2009 Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships. Both the men’s and women’s teams closed well to move up in the standings, as the men’s team finished 3rd and women’s team was fourth. Both races were tight. On the women’s side 2 points separated 2nd the 4th places, while 1 point separated 3rd and 4th on the men’s side. Despite being sick most of the week, Karlee Coffey once again led the way for the women’s team as she closed well over the final 1,000m to finish second. Behind Coffee, Alma Garcilazo turned in a fine performance. Three freshman, Sarah Hanchett, Nancy Cardenas, and Talissa Baldovino rounded out the scoring. All three competed well, but struggled in the mud with their lack of experience. On the men’s side, DJ Flores turned in another fine performance moving up from 13th to 3rd place over the final 1,000m and set a freshman record in the process. Not far behind, Forrest Lumprey moved up from 24th to 11th to secure a spot on the all conference team. Terry Johnsen, Justin Dean, and Ryan Booth rounded out the scoring. According to coach Welch, Booth turned in a Stellar performance to help secure the teams third place finish. The men’s team is ranked 18th in final poll. Coffey and Flores both qualified for the upcoming NAIA Championship, and Garcilazo should also receive an invitation. With their current ranking the men’s team has a chance to receive an at large bid for the meet, if they don’t Lumprey should receive an invitation as an individual qualifier. The NAIA Championship will be November 21st in Vancouver, Washington. The men’s race is at 10:30 and the women’s race will be at 11:15.
Coffey Wins, Mounties Run Well At College of Idaho Twilight
Caldwell Idaho, October 22— The Eastern Oregon Cross Country teams ran well in their final competition before the upcoming cross country championships. Both teams competed well, but came up just short of squads from C of I. While the actual distance of the course is unknown due to a measurement error, Karlee Coffey destroyed the field in the women’s race, taking the top honors 52 seconds in front of second place. For the Mounties Sarah Hanchett was the second runner, finishing 2nd. Alma Garcilazo, Kendra Stone, and Talissa Baldovino rounded out the scoring with 11th, 12th, and 14th place finishes respectively. Sierra Engler and Christy Roe completed the Mounties top 7. The women’s team was edged 24-31 in the team competition. On the men’s side, DJ Flores once again led the way finishing in a close 2nd place. The men’s squad had a good pack, as all five scorers finished in the Top 12 places. Closely behind Flores was Forrest Lumprey in 4th, Terry Johnsen in 6th, Justin Dean in 8th, and Jeff Roy in 12th. Similar to the women, the men were edged 26-32 in the team race. The Mounties will now have a two week break as they prepare for the Cascade Conference Championships on November 7th in Springfield, Oregon.
Men and Women Squads Close Second In Duels With Northwest Nazarene
La Grande Oregon, October 17— The EOU Cross Country teams dueled NNU as part of the homecoming festivities. Both squads competed well, but came up just short. With her second place finish Karlee Coffey once again lead the women’s team. She was followed by Sarah Hanchett in 7th, Talissa Baldavino in 9th, Kendra Stone in 11th, and Sierra Engler in 12th. They were missing two of their top 5 runners from previous races and were edged by NNU 23 to 32. On the men’s side freshman DJ Flores lead the way for the second straight race with his third place finish. The men’s team had good pack with Forrest Lumprey in 4th, Terry Johnson in 6th, Kody Coxen in 10th, and Ryan Booth in 15th. Like the women the men’s team came up just short losing 24 to 33, however they were running within contention before a mid race injury to Devin White. Next up the Mounties will be in Caldwell, Idaho for the College of Idaho Invite on October 22.
Mounties Have Breakthrough Performance At Charles Bowles Invitational
Salem Oregon, October 3— The EOU Cross Country teams took advantage of ideal conditions, and good fields at the Charles Bowles Invitational, hosted by Willamette University. The men ran first for EOU today and placed 5th out of 24 complete teams, beating, among others, Azusa Pacific's 22nd nationally ranked squad and 7 Conference foes. Leading the way in 25;14, with the fastest time in EOU History by a true freshman, was DJ Flores. Flores was followed closely by Terry Johnsen at 25;20, Kody Coxen at 25:30, Justin Dean at 25:48 and Devin White at 25:52 to round out scoring. All five of the Mounties who scored, ran lifetime personal records. Nine out of 11 of the Men who raced ran PR'S as well. Based on this performance, the men’s team is ranked for the first time this year. Currently ranked 21st. The women’s squad also ran well finishing 8th, with 6 of the 7 teams ahead of them ranked in the NAIA top 20. Once again Karlee Coffey led the way, who despite fighting illness, ran 17:58 for the second meet in a row. Sarah Hanchett dropped another 36 seconds off her PR to run 18:42. Hanchett has now dropped 67 seconds off her High School PR. Nancy Cardenas, nursing a hamstring problem, ran 3rd for EOU at 19:11, Alma Garcilazo followed closely at 19:16, and Talissa Baldovino rounded out scoring at 19:35. Sierra Engler carved almost a minute off her former PR of 20:41 to run 19:48. Rounding out EOU'S squad was freshman Christy Roe at 21:55. After this performance the women rose from 23rd to 19th in the most recent poll. Next up the Mounties will host their only meet in La Grande of the season on October 17th.
Mountie Men Win Conference Preview Meet, Women Second
Springfield Oregon, September 19— The EOU Cross Country teams travelled to Springfield, Oregon to preview the course that will host the conference championship meet in November, and came a way with good showings by both teams. Led by the “young guns” the Mountie men dominated the meet, while the women finished a close second. On the women’s side five freshman made up the Mounties top 7. Karlee Coffey once again led way, finishing second in the race. Freshmen Nancy Cardenas finished 5th in her first collegiate race, with Sarah Hanchett not far behind. Alma Garcilazo and Kendra Stone, the only two returners, wrapped up the scoring; while Telissa Baldavino and Sierra Engler rounded out the top seven. Overall, six of the seven runners ran lifetime bests with the seventh missing by just two seconds. The Mounties battled conference power Concordia, but came up two points short in the team race. On the men’s side, youth was also the theme of the day, as there were four freshmen in the top 7. Newcomer Kody Coxen ran a stellar race to finish 8th overall, and was the second collegian in the race. He was followed closely by Terry Johnsen and DJ Flores. Kevin Miller and Forrest Lumpry rounded out the scoring for the Mounties, with Devin White and Justin Dean wrapping up the top seven. The men’s squad used good pack dynamics to dominate the meet with 35 point win over Concordia University. The mounties had a 1 to 5 gap of just 38 seconds, and 1 to 7 spread of 59 seconds. The Mounties will have a week off, before travelling to Salem, OR on October 3 for the Charles Bowels Invitational, hosted by Willamette University.
Mounties Open Season At NNU Invitational
Nampa Idaho, September 12— The Eastern Oregon University Cross Country teams opened the 2009 cross country season at the NNU Roger Cochran Invitational, and the young mountie squads competed well in the small, yet competitive meet. On the women’s side, Karlee Coffey led the way finishing 4th in her first ever cross country race, with Christine Eckstein close behind in 6th. Rounding our the scoring was Sarah Hanchett, Alma Garcilazo, and Kendra Stone. Overall it was a good opener, as 6 women ran faster than the second runner last year on the same course, and Garcilazo ran an amazing 91 seconds faster than her time last year over the 4k course. As a team the women finished 4th overall, a mere 24 points behind first place. On the men’s side 4 of the top 7 runners were freshmen, and there were no seniors in the top 7. For the second year in a row Terry Johnsen was the top finisher, with his 16th place finish He was followed by four freshmen to round out the scoring; DJ Flores in 20th, Kevin Miller in 21st, Devin White in 24th, and Kody Coxen in 26. It was also a good day for the men’s squad as three mounties were faster than last years top finisher, and 8 were faster than last years third finisher. The men’s team also finished 4th in the meet. Next up the Mounties will be in Springfield, OR for the Northwest Christian Invitational / Cascade Conference Preview Meet. |
